Former LaspoSUG (2019/2020) General Secretary, Comr. Mahmoud Afolabi, has, on Wednesday, claimed that students unionism is the basic class for societal politics.

Speaking  at the recently concluded Wara Day celebration organized by the National Association of Kwara State Students (Lasustech Chapter), the current Special Adviser to the Chairman of Ifelodun Local Government Area, Lagos State, emphasized on the importance of youths engagement in politics and nation building, indicating participation in student unionism as the bedrock of such engagement.

“Student unionism is the primary or basic class for societal politics. I can tell you categorically that among all Nigerian Politicians, 60 percent of them pass through students’ unionism. You just need to brace yourself, meet and relate with people. So please do not spoil any relationship with your friends.

“The leadership of this NAKSS, for instance, I believe there will be president and other executive positions. Please try and work hand-in-hand and after school, do not forget your junior ones. Try and always reach out to them. Because by the virtue of association and students unionism, you can attain any position in life” He said.

Comr. Mahmoud, however, highlighted the criteria necessary to participate in politics while stressing on the need to embrace sportsmanship.

“There are some criteria you need as a youth before you participate in politics. Number one is your age. As soon as you attain the age of eighteen, you can involve yourself in politics. When you attain the age of twenty-five, you can aspire for local government election while at the age of thirty, you can aspire for chairmanship, House of Assembly, and the likes. Between age 35-40 upward, believe me, anyone here can be the next governor of our dear states.

“Secondly is education. Before you can involve in politics, you have to be an elite. What do I mean by elite? You have to be a knowledgeable and educated person.

“As a youth, you must have the spirit of sportsmanship. If you find yourself a runner-up, do not relent. There are better things you can attain as God’s time is the best. Sportsmanship requires you not to take the winner as your enemy. What you have to do is to work hand-in-hand with that person so that your own ambition can be realized too.” He added.
