National
Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), has, on Wednesday, launched its first Drug
Free Club in a Lagos-based higher
institution at Lagos State University of Science and Technology (LASUSTECH).
The
launching ceremony which took place at the 500-seater auditorium saw the agency
unveiling the Club’s Pioneer Executive members with the Students Union
Government Speaker, Rt. Hon. Asekun Elijah, emerging as the President of the club.
While
the delivering the welcome address of the event, the Dean of Students Affairs,
Tpl. Ibrahim Oladayo, highlighted the activities of the Club which will be
fully supported by the Agency.
“The
Drug Free Club LASUSTECH from NDLEA is a tool to fight drug abuse, misuse of
drug and purchase of fake and expired drugs. The club will receive necessary
support from the NDLEA in the area of training and so forth in order for the club can impact positively in curbing
criminal activities involving our students and the youths in general.” He said.
Also
speaking at the event was the Acting Vice Chancellor of the Institution, Dr.
Oluremi Nurudeen Olaleye, who commended the effort of the NDLEA-particularly on
their recent discovery of a drug warehouse in Ikorodu.
He
assured the club of the management’s full support and called on the students to partake in the
club’s activities, while also urging NDLEA to extend the club activities to the
society at large.
His
words: “At thus point in time in the nation, I want us to start by recognizing
the effort of the NDLEA. It is a time that many of the youths in the country
are abusing drugs like never before.
“Whatever
organization/association the NDLEA is promoting for students to avoid drugs in
all ramifications on behalf of Lagos State Government and Mr. Governor, my
coming here today is a consent of that organization. I want you to join it en
masse.
“I want to say with all sense of responsibility that the management of this institution will do all what it takes to support this association. I also want to encourage the NDLEA that the association should go into the society too. I know you have a lot to do, but I think a prevention medicine is always a better approach. Because once you ensure that people are properly advised not to do certain things, it is better for us than to be waging war against those actions.”
Meanwhile,
NDLEA Ikorodu Area Commander and Assistant Commander of Narcotics, Mr. Lawal
Isiaka Opeloyeru, commended the effort of the management in ensuring the
institution is drug free, stressing that there has not been any reported cases
of drug abuse within the campus despite the presence of agency’s undercover officers.
He,
however, urged the students to steer clear of drug abuse as it ruins their potentials
as future leaders.
“It is important to let you know that drug abuse destroys the potential need to become future leaders. We look up to you as Nigeria’s future leaders. However, a person that is physically and mentally deficient due to the effect of drug abuse, cannot be trusted in leadership position.” He said.
Other
dignitaries present at the event include the Deputy Commander of Narcotics,
Lagos State Command, Mrs. Chniyere Eziaghiala, the Divisional Police Officer,
Ikorodu -Shagamu Police State, CSP. Adekunle Omisakin, LASUSTECH Librarian, Alh.
