The new  Vice Chancellor of Lagos State University of Science and Technology, Professor Olumuyiwa Odusanya, has delivered his first official speech, stressing that his administration cannot afford to fail in discharging its duties and responsibilities.

Speaking at last week’s inauguration of the first elected Senates of the University, the Vice Chancellor revealed that a lot is expected of the Senates, but expressed confidence that they can live up to the tasks.

His words: “A lot is expected from members of the Senate especially those privileged to be at the inauguration ceremony today. We will need to regulate the frequency of the meeting of the senates. We will need to set up senate committees and do all in our power in collaboration with the Governing Council to ensure that the objectives of this great university are achieved.

“I am sure that the distinguished embers of the Senate will live up to responsibility. Thus, we must be exemplary in our behaviour; we must familiarize ourselves with the university laws and regulations and must be great ambassadors of the university.

“We cannot afford to fail in discharging our duties and responsibilities. Let us arise to move forward the university of excellence.”

Meanwhile, the VC expressed his delight over the inauguration ceremony as he listed out the full members of the Senate alongside the newly elected ones.

“This is a historic and daring step for the university. It is indeed a day of joy and celebration. Only a few have had the privilege to witness the inauguration of the university senates.

“The membership of the Senate consists of the Vice Chancellor as the Chairman, Deputy Vice Chancellor – both Academics and Administration, University Librarian, the Provost, Deans of Colleges and Students Affairs, Heads of Departments, all Professors of the University, Directors Academic Programmes, and the six elected members of the Academic Staffs. That is in conformity with the law of the university.

“With the inauguration of the senates today, the university have moved one step further with the adoption of the best University traditions and culture.” He said

He further highlighted the functions of the Senate in relation to the University administration.

“Among the many functions of the Senate, the Senate is responsible for the formulation and establishment of the University’s academic policy and advising the council on the provisions of the policy; regulate the admission of persons to the university; award degrees; regulate all examinations of the university and appoint internal and external examiners; and promote research in the university.” He added.

While addressing the Pressmen after the ceremony, Prof. Olumuyiwa urged members of staff to keep up with their work as he presented his vision for the university.

“…for our staffs, keep doing what you are doing and keep raising the bar so we can achieve excellence.

“I have a vision called the IMPACT vision which focuses on Infrastructure, Manpower Development, and Productivity of Staffs. We are looking at our university becoming the catalyst for the state government to run its agenda to develop the state, and we want to do town and down and industry partnership to ensure that we deliver and known as a global brand.” He said.
