Students of Lagos State University of Science and Technology (LASUSTECH) bid farewell to their colleague, Aresho Okikiola Adeola, who passed away on July 11, 2024.
Okikiola, a 100-level Chemical Engineering student, died shortly after complaining of a stomach ache. According to her uncle, "she had been experiencing fever and was treated, after which she seemed okay. However, in the early hours of Thursday, July 11, she complained of stomach upset and cold, which rapidly worsened, affecting her breathing. Before we knew it, she had passed away, her uncle recounted, She just left, just like that."
Her classmates, who described her as a good friend and a pure-hearted member of the class, attended her burial in large numbers. Lecturers present at the burial included Dr. Fadayini Oluwafemi, Mr. Fakunmoju (Assistant Director of Students' Affairs), and David Gabriel (Chairman of the Student Consultative Assembly)
The deceased's uncle, Mr. Fashakin Adewale, described her as brilliant and impactful, saying, "She made an impact on everyone she met." He added that she had been treated for fever and was recovering but suddenly complained of stomach upset and cold before passing away.
In an interview with the Student Representative Council Chairman, Comrade Gabriel David Oluwasegun, "It is with great pain and sorrow that I stand before you today, on the day of her burial, to pay tribute to our dear colleague, I had the pleasure of knowing her, and I recall that she was one of the few students who participated in our artificial intelligence revolution program and boot camp.
"Her dedication and enthusiasm were evident in her attendance and graduation from the program, which showed her seriousness and commitment. My advice to the students is to always approach life with openness and love for one another, as our actions will be remembered by what we have done" he said.
In an interview, Mr. Fadayini Oluwafemi, a lecturer in Chemical Engineering, remembered Okikiola as a calm and focused individual who always minded her business. He advised students to recognize that life is in stages and to prioritize internal values.
Ayomide Uthman, HOC Chemical Engineering, shared his thoughts on the loss of his colleague, "To be honest, I'm still in shock. I didn't expect to lose her so soon, especially since I've only known her for less than 8 months. She was a kind and friendly person, always building others up. When I heard what happened to her, I was devastated. Her passing is a reminder to be grateful to God in every situation we find ourselves in."
Mr. Fakumoju Folajuwon, Assistant Director of Students' Affairs, expressed his condolences, saying, "God gives and takes. Our only hope is in God." He advised students to put their hope in God and give their lives to Christ.
