 LASUSTECH Inaugurates New Executives for Campus Journalists

Lagos State University of Science and Technology (LASUSTECH) has inaugurated the new executives of the Union of Campus Journalists (UCJ), emphasizing the importance of leadership and professionalism in campus journalism. 


The ceremony, held at the News Editing Studio of the Mass Communication Department, marked a significant milestone for the student journalists.



In his keynote address, Mr. Lekan Otunfodurin, Executive Director of the Media Career Development Network, highlighted the vital role of journalism in addressing societal challenges such as misinformation and disinformation.

He encouraged the new executives to lead with humility and engage actively in their roles to ensure the dissemination of accurate and truthful information.



Mr. Yinka Olaito, Executive Director of the African Foundation for Young Media Professionals (AFYMP), reminded the students of the core principles of journalism: truth, fairness, and accuracy. 




He urged the new leaders to embrace their positions as a call to service, develop teamwork skills, and become proficient in modern technologies and event management.


Dr. Zannu Prosper, Head of the Mass Communication Department, congratulated the new executives and pledged departmental support for their initiatives.

He encouraged them to utilize the knowledge gained from the speakers to enhance their journalistic practices and administration.


Mr. Gbenga Akanmu, Staff Adviser to the association, spoke on the historical impact of journalism in Nigeria and urged the students to maximize their opportunities to become influential voices in society.


“Journalism has always been the tool for societal re-engineering beginning from its birth in the Nigerian soil in 1859 where , from the information contained in the inspired writings of early journalists as John Jackson, were instrumental to effecting societal change, he said “.


Habeeb Irewole, the newly appointed president of the UCJ, expressed his commitment to advancing campus journalism and thanked attendees for their support. 




The immediate past president, Adebayo Nurudeen, acknowledged the hard work of his team and encouraged the new executives to continue building on their achievements.


“Journalism is like a football team , each players depends on each other , he said “. 


The inauguration ceremony concluded with the unveiling of the new executive members by the past president and a donation of books to the association by Mr. Lekan Otunfodurin.

Students Barred from LASUSTECH First Gate Over Safety Concerns

By Habeeb Ibrahim and Adefeso Precious Students of the Lagos State University of Science and Technology (LASUSTECH) were on Monday morning restricted from accessing the campus through the First Gate, tagged as West Gate 1, due to safety concerns. The restriction led to confusion among students, who were subsequently directed by security personnel to use the Second Gate for entry into the campus. Speaking on the development, security officials disclosed that the action followed an incident that occurred around 7:00 p.m. on Sunday, when a tension wire was reportedly cut from a pole and fell directly at the entrance of First Gate. According to the security personnel, the fallen wire posed a potential risk of injury, electric shock, or sparks to students and other individuals passing through the gate.
