By Habeeb Ibrahim
The Mass Communication Department of Lagos State University of Science and Technology (LASUSTECH) officially inaugurated the annual academic seminar named "Touch Base Series" on January 10, 2024. This seminar invites alumni of the department to educate students on academics and life after school.
The 2024 seminar featured Dr. Kayode Odumboni, a former student of Lagos State Polytechnic, now called LASUSTECH. Dr. Odumboni graduated fifteen years ago with a National Diploma in Mass Communication before proceeding to the University of Lagos (UNILAG), where he earned a B.A. in English (First Class Honors). He recently completed his Ph.D. in English from The Ohio State University, Columbus, where he also earned his M.A. in English.
In a welcome address delivered by the Head of the Department of Mass Communication, Dr. Zannu Prosper Nunayon, he introduced the guest speaker, stating, "As the Head of Department, it's an honor to introduce our esteemed guest lecturer, Dr. Kayode Odumboni, a shining star and proud alumnus of our very own department!"
"Today, Dr. Odumboni, now an Assistant Teaching Professor at Arizona State University, USA, returns to his roots to inspire and empower us with his remarkable journey and insights. His topic, 'Finding Your Frequency: Tuning into Your Passion and Purpose,' couldn't be more timely or relevant to your academic and professional pursuits.
"As you embark on this intellectual adventure, remember that your time here is a tuning fork, resonating with possibilities. It's a chance to fine-tune your skills, discover your unique voice, and harmonize your aspirations with the world's needs."
He motivated the students by highlighting four key points: listen attentively to Dr. Odumboni's wisdom, ask bold questions, network, and reflect on your passions and purposes. Most importantly, find your frequency and let it resonate loud and clear!
Speaking on the topic “Finding Your Frequency: Tuning into Your Passion and Purpose,” Dr. Odumboni shared his expertise and experiences on academics and family life. He highlighted three keywords for excelling in academics: being involved, not being a passive student who studies only to pass exams but rather aiming to achieve a record, and showing interest and passion in any field of study.
During the question and answer session, Roheemah asked how he conquered challenges during his study life. Dr. Odumboni replied, "If you are serious in life, you will encounter challenges. I faced different challenges while studying in the United States because the academic and cultural climate was totally different, but I discovered my failures and strengths."
Additionally, Agbonware Favour sought advice, asking, "What can someone do if they do not have passion for the course they are studying?" Dr. Odumboni responded, quoting, "It is better to have it and not need it than to need it and not have it." He advised Favour and all students to focus on their studies and develop their capacity over time, even if they are not passionate about their course.
Another student, Kayode Bukola, the class governor for the 200 level class, asked Dr. Odumboni about his motivation and how he achieved his goals. In response, Dr. Odumboni stated that poverty motivated him. He also mentioned that his father inspired him, as his father would always say, "The only inheritance I owe you is your education, so face it."
Lecturers present at the inauguration included Dr. Zannu Prosper, Dr. Steve Adesemoye, Mr. Ade Inasa-Thomas, Mr. Sammy Ogunsanya, Mr. Nurudeen Hassan, and Mrs. Bridget Adegboye, among others.
In conclusion, Mr. Ade Inasa-Thomas presented a certificate to Dr. Kayode Odumboni in appreciation of his time and lecture. Finally, the class governor for the 200-level class, Kayode Bukola, delivered her closing remarks, expressing gratitude to Dr. Kayode for imparting knowledge to the students.
