LASUSTECH Students Lament Over Economic Hardship

By Adeyemi Oluwanifemi and Mcakinsajijo Faith

Students of Lagos State University of Science and Technology (LASUSTECH) have expressed their displeasure with the rapid increase in the cost of living and sustainance.

The students have made their means of sustainance their priority above their academics. Students that are supposed to focus on their academics are now more concerned about their daily living and how to make ends meet.

From the high cost of transportation to the increase in cost of provisions all of which affects their learning, the students revealed that they are going through a lot and they want things to change for the better.

In an interview with Durojaiye Oluwasegun, a student of the College of engineering, " Everything has changed. Things are now very expensive, my transport fare has increased by #1000 and there is no amount of money your parents can give you as a student now that will be enough. Eating now in this period is very rough, I only eat once a day. This current administration is very tough, I must admit".

Richard Oluchi, an 100 level Agricultural student says, " This economy hardship has really affected me a lot as a student. I barely eat in a day because I want to save money to go to school the next morning. At times I trek from my hostel to school just so I could be able to eat. I really wish everything would go back to the way it was before ".

Adebayo Oluwapelumi, a student of Business Administration said, " The economy has affected me in a lot of ways. Firstly, in the payment of school fees especially for my parents that are earning so little, how are we supposed to sustain ourselves. Also, considering the fact that I'm not the only child in my family going to school, they also have to pay the fees of my siblings. In the aspect of feeding also, we can barely afford to eat twice a day and even transport fare has also increased, everything is just upside down".

Mustapha Aishat, a student of Computer Science department added, " Honestly speaking, although I'm not fending for myself, it is still very sad watching my parents struggling so hard to make ends meet and ensure that my siblings and I remain in school. With how everything is increasing at a rapid rate, the amount of time and effort they put into work just to earn so little is really not encouraging ".

Oyelowo Olasunkanmi, a 200 level student of Mass Communication department said, " The situation of the economy is not hitting me at the right side at all. I have not been happy, I have not been able to feed well. To also get the money for transport fare sometimes is always hard, especially when it rains, the way they just increase the price is just unreasonable. This is all alarming and it has to stop because I'm really tired ".

Al-ameen Tiramisu also a student of Mass Communication department added, " The way this economy is affecting students lives is becoming worse. Things are excavating beyond the levels they ought to go. First of all, transport fare is supposed to be easy for students because we are the leaders of tomorrow. Even transportation within the school premises should be free however that's not the case it is also expensive. We are really struggling. Imagine not eating and you're attending a class, everything will just be in vain. The country is just somehow. Nothing is helping or working".
