The management of Lagos State University of Science and Technology has denied allegations that the newly admitted students of the institution are to pay a fee of three thousand naira to a certain paystack account for the acquisition of a Matriculation gown.

In a broadcast message sent to the students, the management denied such allegations and warned that any student that pays to the said account is at his detriment.

The university’s first matriculation for its pioneer students is slated to hold on Wednesday,  29th of March,2023 at the College of Agriculture auditorium.

The message reads “The attention of the university management has been drawn to an advertisement requesting students to pay three thousand Naira for matriculation gowns to a pay stack account. https://paystack.com/pay/LASUSTECHMATR-2023”

“The notice is fraudulent, did not emanate from the university and no student is required to pay any money for matriculation.  Any student paying to the account does so at his/her risk”.

Speaking to the Directorate of student affairs Dr. Adedamola Aderogba on the alleged payment request expressed his dissatisfaction and labeled it as the work of impostors who wants to capitalize on the newness of the student.

“Most of the payments are captured in their school fees, some people want to exploit the innocence of the student, because they are new lads and most of them are active audiences to messages, especially if it is stated the message is coming from the vice-chancellor,” he said.

He also advised the student to always come down to his office for clarification for any sort of payment and appealed to the press club to use their platform to get across the management message to the students.

The school’s Public Relations Officer also debunked the rumor, stating the story is false and the management never asked anyone to make payment for the gown.

“The university doesn’t support any form of payment and any student who is in doubt, should come to my office, the alleged request for payment is the footprint of fraudsters,” he said.

Favour Adetunmi, a 100-level student from Chemistry Department, said she was surprised when she heard about the payment of the gown until she verified from the Head of class that it was a scam.

“I was surprised the school was telling us to pay for matriculation gown, but the head of class debunked such allegations and said it was a scam,” said Favour.

Adekunle Dotun from Industrial Chemistry Department also claimed he heard about the three thousand payment for the matriculation gown but due to his closeness to a lecturer, he advised against falling for such a scam.

“I could have fallen victim to the scam if not because of my lecturer that clarified the issue “ Said Adekunle.

Some group of students from the Mass Communication department also said they heard about the information and knew it was a scam because the students have been warned against such tactics at the just concluded orientation.

“The school has warned about these strategies, we need to be careful and only a form was given to us to fill by the school management and no payment was attached” They expressed.
