The management of Lagos State University of Science and Technology recalled a school bus conveying 12 students from the Department of Agriculture which was en route to the University of Ibadan to attend the National Association of Agricultural student’s convention earlier last week.

The bus was to transmute the students from the school premises to the University of Ibadan to attend the National Association of Agricultural student (NAAS) southwest annual convention slated to hold from the 15th to 17th of march and on getting to Ogijo, Ogun state the bus driver received a call from the Directorate of student affairs office to return to the school.

“The bus driver received a phone call at Ogun State from the Directorate of Students’ Affairs office on behalf of the Vice-chancellor to stop the journey and return to the school premises because of the Federal Government directive on the closure of school activities ”. – said one of the students.

The seminar tagged “Role of youth in Reviving Nigeria Agriculture and Economy towards National Development and Self Reliance” is held yearly serving as a party line for student networking, a forum for debate, and a platform for other side attractions.

Speaking to the Ag directorate of student affairs, Dr. Adedamola Aderogba  he explained various reasons for the recall one of which is student safety.

He said, “The student went through the necessary channels and they were given consent, but due to the timing of the event being close to the date of the gubernatorial election and to avoid unforeseen circumstances, we had to call them to return”.

He also said the management's decision in allowing the students to leave was a hasty decision and the absence of a guardian to look over the affairs of the student was also put into consideration.

“I took the letter to the Vice Chancellor myself and without verification the Vc signed it, the  Dean of the Agric department also told me he was invited to the program and I concluded he will be going with them”.

“I called the President of the department to appeal to him and we look forward to more of their programs,” said Dr. Aderogba.

However, while narrating the ordeal, a student said it was a devastating event which will lead the students to query the relevance of the process and influence of the Students’ Union Government.

“We went through the necessary process, documents were signed by the Dean, Head of the department, and the Vice chancellor”.

“The student union will not do anything regarding this, I doubt that they know their role “. – said the student.

Another student considered the action an ill-prepared decision and lamented over the implications of not attending the convention.

“The charter fee of 20,000 naira was paid for the organizers, we fuelled the bus with 10,000 worth of fuel, which will not be refunded”.

In a discussion with our correspondent, some of the students expressed their dissatisfaction over the issue as a bad reputation for the school's image.

“We have informed the organizers of the program of our coming, there are reservations made for us, and competitions have been staged, Will that give the school a good reputation”.

Present at the event were DR. Olabode  Adetoyi the commissioner for Agriculture, Ekiti State, and Comrade Adeleke Ewatomilola NAAS southwest coordinator.
