Lagos State Polytechnic  Student Union Government has declared its support for the incumbent governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, and his Deputy, Obafemi Hamzat for a 2nd term in office.

In a statement signed by the Students’ Union Government President, Surakat Muftaudeen, and issued by the Public Relations Officer, Hassan Nurudeen, explained their support for the governor’s second term bid, stressing that he has done a lot but has some unfinished businesses.

The statement read in part, “The students of Lagos State University of Science and Technology with their entire weight throw their full support on the side of Governor Babajide Sanwo-olu for his re-election in the forthcoming gubernatorial election scheduled to hold on 18th of March 2023.

“As we pledge our full and unwavering  support, we encourage the entire students of Lagos state university to give sanwo-olu another great opportunity, we as well enjoin fellow students across the state to give their vote and unreserved support to the Governor while we wish him to victory at the polls ahead 2023 gubernatorial elections”

Though admitted the need to be apolitical, the Union, however, considered supporting the incumbent Governor, highlighting his contribution to the academic development of the students as well as the institution as a whole.

“The students union body would have loved to be apolitical but we must register our full support for the re-election of the Governor owing to the meritorious first tenure which has changed and improved so many things in the educational sector in recent times.

“Focusing and leveraging on innovation, upgrade, and rehabilitation of tertiary institution within the space of four years, where institutions had earlier been transformed to university from polytechnic and college of education respectively with matching plans to facilitate their new university status.” The statement read further.

Meanwhile, the union’s President had, in a recent interview, debunked claims of party affiliation by the union.

“The union doesn’t belong to any party and the school auditorium is open for anyone, and we aim to foster students’ welfare.” The SUG President had said during the interview.

It could, however, be recalled the Student Union held various symposiums which depicted their affiliation with the All Progressives Congress.

The union organized the mobilization of students to several politically motivated activities which include the APC's rally, the Asiwaju Grassroot Talk, and the Let’s Dialogue symposium among others.
