It was another day of merry making with bundles of vibes and grooves at Lasustech’s Kegite club as they celebrate another “tapping day”.

Also known as Ilya du Lacost, the kegites, with their cups and calabashes filled with holy water, danced in circles as gyration orchestrated by a veteran singer, who is regarded as cricket- in Kegites parlance, rented the air.

According to Chief Salisu Yusuf, the head of Ilya du Lacost, the “tapping day”, which takes place every Wednesday, is a day dedicated for merrymaking and celebration of African culture by the Kegites.

“We promote African culture by drinking of palm wine, singing of songs, and dancing among ourselves. However, the club is beyond singing and dancing because as a Kegite member, you have to explore. You will not be restricted to your school alone” He said.

The Chief further revealed that Kegite club exist not just in Nigeria’s tertiary institutions alone, but also across international schools.

“Kegite club is all over schools in Nigeria- even abroad. We have Kegite club in the UK which we call Ilya du Queen.” He added.

Meanwhile, the club has a preserved history that can be traced back to 1962 when it was first established at the University of Ife (now Obafemi Awolowo University) with late Chief Prof. Olusegun Adesina being the first chief of the club.

It is a socio-cultural club which cut across almost every sphere of the country and also, according to OldNaija  extend to academic institutions in Canada, Brazil, Ghana, United Kingdom, India, and Liberia.

Kegite Club also boast of old members such as late Obafemi Awolowo, Former President, Olusegun Obasanjo, Prof. Wole Soyinka, and other big names.
