In what will go down in history as one of its kind, the Students Representative Council (SRC) has set a record of briefing media houses ahead of its inauguration ceremony during a Press Conference held yesterday at the School of Environmental Studies Lecture Hall.
The Press Conference, which was initially slated to hold at the School Agriculture’s 500-Seaters auditorium, saw a change of venue on account of organizers inability to secure the hall before the commencement of the media briefing.
Prior to the event, a Press Release was issued to different media outlets which include Oriwu Sun Newspaper, The Impact Newspaper, Tungba FM, Laspotech FM, IKD FM, and LASUSTECH’s Directorate of Information and Public Relations.
Meanwhile, the Press Club President of the institution, Mr. Safiu Kehinde, tendered his apologies to the Pressmen during his welcome address on account of the delay in commencement of the program. The program started by 11am as against 10am slated in the Press Release.
Following the welcome address, the Speaker of the Students Representative Council, Rt. Hon. Asekun Elijah, and the Majority Leader of the Council, Hon. Sodiq Adam, delivered speeches on the need for students to engage in politics and changing the impression of youths engagement in politics.
On the need for students to engage in politics, the SRC Speaker identified political engagement as the responsibility of every students.
“We owe ourselves the responsibility of political engagement and active participation because; we are the decider of our fate; the owner of our future, and the builder of our nation.” He said.
On his part, the Majority Leader of the Council, Hon. Sodiq, said students and youths engagement in politics will reduce the trend of having the older generation of politicians in power.
“It is however imminent and exigent for students and youths to wake up and realize that if the older Nigerians are the only ones participating in politics, they would only continue to recruit fellow old people because of the African belief that the young cannot speak over the old.” He revealed.
