The Speaker of LASUSTECH’s Students Representative Council, Rt. Hon. Asekun Elijah, has identified ignorance as the cause of youths’ wrong perception of politics.

Speaking at a Press Conference held at the School of Environmental Studies Lecture Hall, the Speaker disclosed that youths perception of politics include violence, political thuggery, and use of brute and force to promote their interest.

Meanwhile, while citing a research work during his speech, Asekun disclosed that unemployment, illiteracy, bad governance, and corruption are not the cause of youths wrong perception politics as most people perceived.

“…all these reasons appeared to be unrelated to this problem. According to research, where there are only educated youths in a political party, ethnic group, or some religious groups, they become the unit of intelligence and operators of command post in order to execute violence for group interest.”

“In the same vein, where there are employed youths in some cases, they are compelled to provide financial needs and other logistics for the execution of violence in the interest of their group. Also, where the government is relatively doing well, the opposition members resort to twisting the minds of the youths against the party in power so as to champion their interest – a case of Mohammed Gadaffi and Libya.”

“Meanwhile, the only problem associated with the misconception of politics by the youths is ignorance which birthed out of their non-participation in this realm of leadership and lack of enlightenment. Thus, it is paramount to get the youths enlightened, engaged, and fully swamped in the political affairs of the country.” He revealed.

The Speaker, however, charged the students to take political engagement as their responsibility for the betterment of their future.

“…this starts with us students. It starts in this Ivory Tower that houses each and everyone of us. We owe ourselves the responsibility of political engagement and active participation because; we are the decider of our fate; the owner of our future, and the builder of our nation.” He said.
