Lagos State University of Science and Technology (LASUSTECH) has recorded another academic milestone after its Building Technology students emerged first runners-up at the National Association of Building Students (NAOBS) Inter-University British Parliamentary Debate Competition hosted by the University of Lagos (UNILAG) on Wednesday.
The competition focused on the theme, "Construction Approval Systems and Materials Quality Standards," with the motion: "This House Believes That Builders Should Bear Sole Legal Liability for Building Collapse Resulting from the Use of Substandard Materials."
Representing LASUSTECH as the Opening Opposition Team were Chief Speaker Abubakr Mudashiru, a 400-level student, Co-Speaker Osho Daniel, Adenekan Qudus, a 200-level student, and Eze Godwins, a 100-level student.
Speaking after the competition, Chief Speaker Abubakr Mudashiru described the experience as rewarding despite the team's second-place finish.
"As the best-performing debater but with a first runner-up certificate, I took priceless things out of the tournament. It taught me that I can set my mind to something and get it done. More than competing, it was about teamwork. From rehearsal days to reviewing points together, I learnt amazing ways to lead a team, inspire growth in others, and help people become better versions of themselves," he said.
Also reflecting on the competition, Adenekan Qudus expressed pride in representing the university.
"It is a great privilege and an honour for all of us to represent our school. This achievement belongs to the entire team, our coaches, our lecturers, and everyone who supported us," he said.
Qudus added that the competition reinforced the importance of teamwork and discipline, noting that the team believes its performance was outstanding despite finishing as runners-up.
The President of the National Association of Building Students (NAOBS), LASUSTECH Chapter, Comrade Bello Ahmed Sunkanmi, commended the team's performance, describing the achievement as a reflection of the university's commitment to academic excellence and intellectual development.
He expressed confidence that the team would build on the experience and return stronger in future editions of the competition.
The achievement has brought pride to the Department of Building Technology and the wider LASUSTECH community, further highlighting the university's growing reputation for excellence in academic and intellectual competitions.
