Lagos Government Moves to Resolve ASUU Strike

The Lagos State Government has taken steps to resolve the ongoing strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) in the state’s three public universities, with approval for the release of funds now awaiting Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu.

The strike, which began on September 15, 2026, has disrupted academic activities at Lagos State University (LASU), Lagos State University of Education (LASUED), and Lagos State University of Science and Technology (LASUSTECH), Ikorodu.

The industrial action followed the expiration of a 14-day ultimatum issued by the Joint Campus Group of ASUU in Lagos State on August 31. The union’s demands include the domestication and implementation of the Federal Government-ASUU agreement signed in December 2025.

The agreement provides for a 40 per cent salary increase for academic staff, payment of the Consolidated Academic Tools Allowance (CATA), and other welfare provisions, with implementation effective from January 1, 2026.

The Lagos State Commissioner for Tertiary Education, Tolani Sule, said the government had reviewed the agreement and calculated its financial implications.

Sule said the government was awaiting the governor’s approval to release the funds, which he expected to happen between Monday and Wednesday.

He explained that the financial requirements were not included in the state’s 2026 budget, adding that the government would have to reorder the budget and source funds from other Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs).

Sule appealed to lecturers and students to remain calm, noting that academic activities remained suspended across the three institutions pending a resolution.
