ASUU Strike: LASUSTECH, LASU, LASUED Hit by Indefinite Strike

Academic activities at the Lagos State University of Science and Technology (LASUSTECH), Lagos State University (LASU) and Lagos State University of Education (LASUED) have been disrupted following the declaration of a total and indefinite strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).

The decision was reached on Tuesday, September 15, 2026, after separate branch congresses of ASUU at the three Lagos State-owned universities.

The declaration was contained in a joint statement signed by the Coordinator, Steering Committee, ASUU-LASU, Olusegun Babalola; Acting Chairman, ASUU-LASUED, Grace Abimbola; and Chairman, ASUU-LASUSTECH, Murisiku Onigemo.

The union said the action followed the expiration of a 14-day ultimatum issued to the Lagos State Government on August 31, 2026, without what it described as a satisfactory resolution or concrete plan to address its demands.

In the statement, ASUU declared: "Following the expiration of the 14-day ultimatum issued to the Lagos State Government on 31st August 2026, the Academic Staff Union of Universities Joint Campus Group comprising Lagos State University, Lagos State University of Education and Lagos State University of Science and Technology hereby declares a total, comprehensive and indefinite strike action effective immediately."

The union's principal demand is the full domestication and implementation of the December 2025 ASUU-Federal Government agreement across all Lagos State-owned universities.

According to the union, the demand includes the implementation of the Consolidated Academic Tools Allowance (CATA) as well as critical welfare provisions for serving and retired academic staff.

ASUU said the September 13 deadline passed without the state government initiating what it described as meaningful dialogue. The union had issued a final warning on September 10, stating that "silence is no longer an option."

The union further stated that the strike would remain in force until meaningful engagement produces a satisfactory resolution and the Lagos State Government signs, domesticates and fully implements the applicable provisions of the 2025 agreement.

"The union remains entirely committed to constructive dialogue and to the swift restoration of normal academic activities as soon as these outstanding issues are addressed," ASUU said.

However, the union acknowledged the potential impact of the industrial action on students and the academic calendar, saying it took the decision with a "heavy heart." It appealed to students, parents and other stakeholders to remain calm, peaceful and law-abiding while efforts to resolve the dispute continue.

The strike affects LASUSTECH in Ikorodu/Isolo, LASU in Ojo, LASUED in Oto/Ijanikin, with academic activities across the three institutions expected to remain grounded until the dispute is resolved.
