In celebration of World Clean-Up day, Lagos State University of Science and
Technology’s (LASUSTECH) Students (Isolo Campus) have embarked on Clean-Up
exercise across Isolo community and within the school premises.
Alongside
some other members of the community, the
students had, on Saturday, carry out the Clean-Up exercise, which was organized
by the National Youth Council of Nigeria (Isolo Local Branch) in partnership
with CocaCola, GreenHill Recycling, Lagos State Waste Management Authority
(LAWMA), and Recycling Alliance.
According
to the Director of Sport for the National Association of Polytechnic
Accountancy Students (NAPAS), Owobu Osas, the exercise started at Isolo market
where the students met with Iya Loja of Isolo.
The
students also visited Asolo Palace, meeting with the King and some other groups
of volunteers before returning to the school where the major clean-up was done.
Speaking
on his experience, Osas described the exercise as eventful while also
commending the effort of the SUJC’s Deputy Chief Judge, Moses Babatunde, for
getting the students engaged.
“It
was very eventful as everyone was literally busy with one thing or the other. It
was a lot fun that everyone were together sharing discussion with CocaCola
media team before we return to our school. We felt that the work done at Isolo
market was a little conducive for us as some of the market women did most of
the cleaning. But when we got back to school, we found out that it was very
dirty and that’s where did the main work. We started on a positive note as we
had to clean the whole environment and ensure the environment is conducive and
clean. It was just based on happiness- you doing things where you have your
fellow students around you and attaining one goal which is to ensure the
environment is very clean. That was a very lovely sight for me. Even being an
executive, I love seeing people impactful in something. It was tiring for some people,
but it was lovely.” He said.
According
to NAPAS Social Director, Adesanya Oluwadamilare, the students were split into three
groups for the cleaning of Isolo market.
“Getting
to Isolo market, we were divided into three groups. The clean-up at the market was
successful and fast because most dirt have been cleared and disposed three days
ago.” He said
Also
narrating his experience was Folarin Idris who claimed to be doing such exercise
for the first time.
He,
however, commended street cleaners, admitting that the exercise was a stressful
one.
“The
World Clean-up Day was so interesting and that was my first time of coming out to
do such. It was somehow stressful, but we were dedicated to the exercise. Those
women doing this are trying.” Folarin said.
