The Federation of Epe Division Students Association (LASUSTECH Chapter) has, on Wednesday, held its first Cultural and Heritage Programme today at the School of Agriculture 500-seaters lecture theatre.

Themed “Accelerating the increased participation of youths in the political space: Panacea to good governance”, the event, according to FEDSA President, Adesanya Ibrahim, was the first of its kind among Lagos Indigenous Divisions under the umbrella of the National Union of Lagos State Students (NULASS).

Following the welcome address by the FEDSA President, Adesanya Ibrahim, the Vice President of National Youth Council of Nigeria (South West Zone) Comr. Giwa Moshood, represented by the PRO NYCN (Epe Division) Comr. Shittu Mustapha, delivered the first speech of the event.

Shittu decried the dearth of youths’ participation in politics while urging the students to actively engage in the political process.

His words: “I want to say categorically that those people that still rule this nation today started ruling us from their youthful age. The first Head of States, Major General Yakubu Gowon was just 28 years- if I’m not mistaken, when he became the Head of State.

“Some of us here are over 20 and still unable to make impact. It is important we know that the need for the entire youth populace to rise up to the task of engaging in objective political participation is now. Some people participate but they tend to us their ability and wherewithal in the wrong way.” He said

Meanwhile, Shittu urged the students to get their Permanent Voters Card ahead of next year’s election while also encouraging them to stay put in Nigeria, contributing to the country’s national growth and development rather than migrating to other countries.

Following the keynote speech, the history of Epe was rendered by Kaka Babatunde in tandem with the stage performance presented thereafter by Nurudeen Ibrahim Foundation.

Also performing on stage were music artists which include Tilesh, Adebowale, and other invited artists.

Speaking after the event, FEDSA President, Adesanya Ibrahim, expressed his delight over the success of the programme while also narrating the challenges faced in the course of planning.

“I’m very glad the programme was a successful one despite the challenges. I believe ever since I started this planning since August, I’ve never attended class for this semester just for this program to be successful. But I’m very glad today comes up and we gave our best to it.

“This programme has never occurred in Laspotech, and I’m very glad I made history as the pioneer. That alone really gave me an achievement and it goes a long way. If I’m to say, I faced a lot of challenges. Is it the act of people you are working together giving excuses to count themselves out of the struggle? But I’m very glad we did it to the end.

“All in all, we give thanks to everyone that came around from Epe, LASU, MOCOPED, and other schools. I’m honored.” He said.

On the continuity of the programme, Adesanya was optimistic of witness a second edition of the event under the coming executives as he highlighted three types of mindset necessary for achieving such feat.

“There was once FEDSA before our sect which they don’t know in school and we’re not recognized. I wouldn’t blame those that were into the game then because most of them faced the challenges I faced but they gave up. Is it that of the executives I have but I don’t normally see? Is it the calling of meetings that the executives won’t show up? Despite these, I was determined to do this amid several discouragement.

“There is one thing we people refuse to realize which is that for everything you want to do in life, have these three type of mindsets. Is it the one that people see the potential in you? Is it the one you see in people? And the third one is the one you so have in mind to do. These three mindsets is very important for one to discover him or herself.” He added.
