Another season to cash out beckons every students of Lagos State University of Science and Technology (LASUSTECH) as the race to become King and Queen of LasusAlive begins with #100,000 grand and a session scholarship up for grab.

The annual beauty pageant competition, formerly called Face of LaspoAlive, is set to commence its fourth season since inception and its first since the conversion of Lagos State Polytechnic to Lagos State University of Science and Technology.

Aside the King and Queen categories, the competition also have Mr. and Miss Charisma who are often selected based on individual performance in the competition.

In contrast to the perception of the competition as being limited to Full-time students, the current queen emerged from Part-time studies which indicates that it is open to students across every programme.

In an exclusive interview with LaspoWatch, the founder of Alive Nigeria- the mother body of the pageantry competition, Sikiru Azeez, narrated the history of the competition, revealing the motive behind it.

“It is a very long story which started in 2018. Then, I was a music artist. Upon getting admission to Laspotech for my HND Programme, I thought of having a fanbase in the school that would support me anytime I drop a new single. I thought of what I could do to attract students’ interest and sell my name across every faculties and departments. I thought I could create a platform for all music artists or any creative artists like content creators within the school for them to promote their brand. My plan then was to create a website where students can patronize and place their songs or contents. By so doing, people will download the song and it will go viral. That was the initial concept.” He narrated.

The narrative, however, changed at the point of giving the project a name as the thought which birthed LaspoAlive struck Azeez’ mind.

“It was when I started drawing the plan of what I want to achieve because as a communicator, you have to map out your plan. Something came to my mind when thinking of a name for the project. Back then, what many students do say around was that nothing is actually happening in Laspotech. They were of the view that Laspotech is dead. This gave me the inspiration to come up with the notion that Laspotech is not dead but alive. That was what brought about LaspoAlive. It was along that line that the thought of what features do I want the website to have and what other services can we render came to being. That was when I started thinking of organizing a competition that the students can participate in and get rewarded. That was what gave birth to the Face of LaspoAlive. An again, it came during the time I had ambition to become the Social Director (SUG) of the school.” Azeez said.

Speaking on the benefits and expectations for the students who participate in the competition, Azeez highlighted exposure and opportunities as part of the gain for participating in the competition.

“They should expect opportunities, exposure, and something taking them to stardom. Participating in LasusAlive competition alone will give students the platform to build a name for themselves. During the competition, thousands of audience will see your face. So it is a platform to introduce yourself to the world that this brand name exists. It is something they can build upon. It is going to be a CV for them in any subsequent things they will like to do. They should expect opportunities. They should expect twists and turns as we are always on top of our game just to make the competition a good and intriguing one every year.” He revealed.

However, the competition, according to the convener, is not limited to students who are nursing modelling career as it is open to all.

“It is for all. That is why we don’t make it an official pageantry. It is a beauty contest and not modelling contest. We are not going to do the audition based on their knowledge in modelling. We only want to know if you have something to offer the world. We are more concerned with your passion, skills, and intelligence.” He added.
