Students Corner: 5 Things You Shouldn’t Do This Semester

The second semester is the most tricky semester of the semester pair, and most students oftentimes end up falling for its traps. Today, we put together 5 things you should avoid to come out distinctive in the second semester.

1. Getting Carried Away By Social Activities and Not Being Studious


As a student your number priority for coming or returning to the higher institution is to learn, improve your intelligence and to crown it, make good grades. However, the second semester has a bulk of activities to absorb your priorities. Smart students often use this period to be more focused on studies than attending social gatherings and events, they also ensure their times are well planned to balance work and play. Attend social events on campus to build yourself and connect with other students, but ensure its not at the detriment of your class, test, or reading periods. After social campus events, return to the library or a convenient location and spend quality time reading.

 2. Missing Lectures

The beginning of a student’s failure starts with being absent in class. You miss out the lecturer’s physical demonstrations, mentorship and mark for attendance. Being in class often save students during examinations and test periods because most lecturers reveal potential area of concentrations (AOC). In fact, for some lecturers, most lectures are guidance towards the already prepared test and examination questions. Do not miss any class this semester.

3. Not Practicing Reading Culture

As a student, reading should be your habit especially in a second semester that gives you an extra year (if a final year student) for failing any course. When reading becomes your habit, you become a master of every course, and also tutor your classmates if necessary.

Reading Culture was introduced to Public secondary school students in Lagos State by the Education board, and a special time was picked before closing hours, teachers were assigned to monitor students to read daily. As a student in the tertiary institution, be your board, introduce the culture of reading and be the teacher of yourself.

 4. Not Taking High Unit Courses Serious

As earlier revealed, the joy of schooling comes through a good grade. The most tricky part of a second semester is high unit courses. Courses with 3, 4 units and above. Scoring low grades in this courses brings a terrible ripple effect on your CGPA (Cumulative Grade Point Aggregate). Take them serious by studying adequately, attending classes and tutorials, tests and practical.

5. Not Attending Practical Classes

This may not relate to you if you do not have a course with practical this semester. However if it relates, ensure to be at every practical classes with the required laboratory coats, practical books, and required materials. Submit your practical manuals when due and main a good practical presentation skill.
