The Vice Chairman of Nigerian Institute of Mechanical Engineers (NIMECHE), Egbin Chapter, Ademola Onanuga, has tasked female Engineers to invent domestic appliances during the induction of new members of the institute yesterday.

Highlighting excessive importation of goods including domestic appliances as one of Nigeria ‘s problem, Onanuga had called on the women to invent while speaking during a courtesy visit to the Dean, School of Engineering, Engr. Yakubu Bankole, by the institute in accomplice to the Association of Professional Women Engineers of Nigeria (APWEN).

Prior to the induction ceremony held at the school of Engineering lecture theatre, members of APWEN had decorated the Dean as their new Patron while advocating for the presence of female engineers in the industry which NIMECHE Vice Chairman commended.

“It is necessary for us (male Engineers) to support. Also we will urge you to make your presence known and seen. Not only in just gathering and presenting lectures.

“More especially in an academic institution like this, I think one of the things you need to do is to encourage the upcoming girl engineers at least by introducing some programmes maybe once in a year or in collaboration with the school management. That will make your presence seen in the school and will encourage the upcoming ones.” He said.

The Vice Chairman further stressed on the need for the female engineers to be innovative and come up with inventions just like their male counterparts.

“Beyond just meetings and delivering of lectures, we should try to use our ingenuity to solve Nigeria’s problem. We have problems all over, ranging from infrastructures to our domestic appliances. Even you as women, some of the appliances you use are mostly imported.

You can discuss among yourselves and see how you can design one or two appliances to curb your domestic challenges. That is how we grow and impact on our lives. That is how we put money in our pockets.” He said.
