It
was a tale of killing two birds with a stone for Super Falcons as Rasheedat
Ajibade’s lone goal defeated Cameroon at the ongoing Women African Cup of Nations to secure a Semi-Final spot and 2023 FiFA Women World Cup ticket for the
Nigerian female football team earlier today.
Following
a second-place finish at the group stage, Randy Waldrum’s led Super Falcons were
tied against the Lioness of Cameroon at
the quarter-finals which also stand as the decider of countries to represent
Africa at the upcoming 2023 FIFA Women World Cup.
The
defending champions, despite their dominant display, endured a frustrating
goalless first-half against Cameroon as both team failed to find the back of
the net.
However,
the second-half saw the Cameroonians succumbed
to Nigeria’s pressure as Ifeoma Onumonu’s 57th minute lob pass met Rasheedat
Ajibade who headed the ball beyond the reach of Cameroon’s goalkeeper, Ange
Bawou.
Ajibade’s
header also stood as Nigeria’s only shot on target across the 90 minutes of
play, but was sufficient enough to seal a Semi-Final spot and World Cup ticket
for the team.
Despite
the single shot on target, Super Falcons
enjoyed 54 percent ball possession and an impressive 272 complete passes with
62 percent pass accuracy as against Cameroon’s 232 passes and 59% pass accuracy.
Meanwhile,
the Super Falcons will meet the tournament’s host, Morocco, at the Semi-Finals,
while Zambia, who ousted Senegal out of the tournament via penalty shootout, awaits
the winner between South Africa and Tunisia.
Providing
the Super Falcons progress to the final, they will be a match close to winning a
tenth WAFCON Trophy.
