SMBS and Mass Communication Department merge as Management releases 33 take-off programmes ahead of new session (See Full list of Programmes below)

There has been mergers of schools and departments across Lagos State university of science and technology, (Lasustech) formerly Lagos State Polytechnic (Laspotech) ahead of 2022/ 2023 academic session.

This was contained in last week’s release of thirty three programs by the school authority which saw the School of Management and Business Studies (SMBS) merged with Mass Communication Department.

With the establishment of five colleges which replaced the initial seven schools that made up the institution, programmes offered at SMBS were combined with Mass Communication Department to form the College of Applied Social Science.

Prior to the transmutation of the institution from Lagos State Polytechnic to Lagos State University of Science and Technology, the School of Management and Business Studies offered six Programmes which are Accounting, Insurance, Marketing, Business Administration, Office Technology Management, Banking and Finance while Mass Communication is the only programme available under the School of Communication and Liberal Studies (SCLS).

Meanwhile, new programmes such as Economic Science and Actuarial Science, were included to the College of Applied Social Science, bringing all available programmes in the faculty to eight.

Reacting to the development, the President of Management and Business Studies Students Association (MABUSSA), Balogun Samson, lauded the decision to combine both faculties as one.

“Well, I would say it’s a nice one. And it’s time for both faculties to come together to make changes in the college” he said.

Similarly, MABUSSA's Social Director, Awomosu Kemisola, commended the effort of the school management in bringing both faculties together ahead of the coming session.

“I would say it’s a good one as the school management would be able to manage the faculty well because those are the two largest faculties in terms of numbers in the school.” She said.

On the other hand, the President of Mass Communication Students Association (MACSA), Odunewu Kehinde, though commended the decision to merge both faculties, but was also of the view that both faculties should have not been combined giving the complexity and wide scope of Mass Communication as a whole.

“If left for me, I’ll honestly want School of Communication and Liberal Studies to stand alone as well as SMBS, but the school management and government knows better. For me, I think both should not have been merged because School of Communication and Liberal Studies could have Mass Communication, Public Relations, Advertising, Photography, Graphics Design, and other departments. SMBS also have a whole lot of departments under them.

“But coming together is still a good thing as we have good synergy and history between us. We are all under the school management and they understand what is better. Every Universities have their style of doing things.” He said.

While both associations claimed to be on good terms academically, they, however, admitted to their political differences but looked forward to burying the hatchet of rivalry between them.

Expressing his concern over the students leaders from both faculties, MABUSSA President called for a constitutional review that will favor all departments in the new college.

“I believe no issues will come up from the part of both management but on the hand of student leaders. Because they will be like we’re champion of our Faculty before convergence. But if they can understand one another no issue will arise” He said.

For MACSA President, both faculties have a lot in common and are the closest field of study that can be merged together considering the similarities they share.

“We are the closest people you can merge together. You can’t merge Mass Communication with the likes of Engineering, Environmental Studies, Agriculture or Fishery, SLT, or Computer Science. Neither can you merge SMBS with Engineering. There’s a huge gap between both. We can only be merged with departments that offer similar courses as we do which is SMBS.” He said.

The President, however, admitted that it will take a long time for both faculties to understand that they are now under the same faculty.

“One of the challenges likely to be faced is understanding. It will take the students a long time to understand that they are now under the same umbrella and get familiar with the process- especially the staylites. To them, adapting to new faces, new lecturers, and new development will more or less be challenging.”

“When it comes to power (politically), particularly when electing Faculty President for the College, SMBS may feel like we should have the power while the School of Communication and Liberal Studies may also feel the power belongs to them. These are some of the likely challenges to be faced.” He said.

    Sincerely, it is a great step especially the emergence of both schools but the biggest question still is " How well is the institution willing to take both party when there is a dispute in future"..... Greatest Laspotian student !!!

100 Level Defeats 200 Level Mass Communication Students 4-3

Both team played a 1-1 draw at the end of regulation time that resulted in penalty kick. The 200 level student opened score in the second half of the keenly contested match, while the 100 level student equalised just at the nick of time to drag the game into penalty kick. NELFUND: LASUSTECH Receives ₦112M, Contradicting Initial ₦7.8M for 82 Students

By Habeeb Ibrahim     The Lagos State University of Science and Technology (LASUSTECH) has acknowledged the receipt of ₦112,057,000.00 (One Hundred and Twelve Million, Fifty-Seven Thousand Naira Only) from the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND).  The funds were allocated to 1,233 students under the NELFUND student loan program. This announcement contradicts an earlier statement by NELFUND, which indicated that only 82 LASUSTECH students would benefit from a total disbursement of ₦7,853,000. The development was disclosed in a letter signed by the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Olumuyiwa Omotola Odusanya, and addressed to the Managing Director/CEO of NELFUND.  "The institution acknowledges the receipt of payment of ₦112,057,000.00 for 1,233 students who applied for the NELFUND student loan program," Prof. Odusanya stated in the letter.
