By Igwe Grace Chiamaka   The Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) has urged the Federal and State Governments to immediately release funds for the implementation of the 2026 agreement signed with the union on June 29, 2026, including the payment of outstanding salary arrears.  The demand was made in a communiqué issued after the union's 55th National Executive Council meeting held at Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University, Bauchi, from July 22 to 24. In the communiqué signed after the meeting,  SSANU said the June 29 agreement was a product of prolonged negotiations and must not be treated as optional. The union warned that failure to implement the salary increase, allowances and other welfare provisions would undermine morale among non-teaching staff and jeopardize industrial harmony in universities. The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) confirmed the development on Friday, with many students across the country sharing screenshots of credit alerts on X. In a statement, NANS National President Akinteye Babatunde welcomed the payments and assured students that all outstanding backlogs would be settled. “The payment of June and July NELFUND upkeep allowances has officially commenced. As I assured you, every outstanding backlog will be paid. We remain committed to ensuring that no eligible Nigerian student is left behind,” he said.
