LASUSTECH Issues Campus Health Advisory Amid Nigeria’s Ebola Case

By Irikefe Oghenetega Victor.

Lagos State University of Science and Technology (LASUSTECH) has released a campus-wide health advisory in response to Nigeria’s recent confirmation of an Ebola case.

Nigeria confirmed its first Ebola Virus Disease case in about a decade on 20 October, 2026. The imported case involved a woman in Abuja who had recently travelled from Uganda; she developed symptoms on 7 October, sought care days later, and tested positive for the Bundibugyo strain linked to a larger outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Ebola is a severe illness that spreads through direct contact with the bodily fluids of an infected or deceased person, contaminated objects, or the handling of raw or undercooked bushmeat. It does not spread through the air. Symptoms can appear between 2 and 21 days after exposure and typically begin suddenly with high fever, severe headache, muscle and joint aches, extreme fatigue, and sore throat, later progressing in some cases to vomiting, diarrhoea, rash, organ impairment, and bleeding.

In response, LASUSTECH’s Directorate of Medical Services issued the advisory to all students and staff across its Ikorodu, Isolo, and Surulere campuses. The university emphasized that the campuses are still safe but stressed that proactive education and strict adherence to prevention measures form the strongest defense against any potential risk.

LASUSTECH has directed students and staff to practise rigorous hand hygiene by washing with soap and water for at least 20 seconds or using alcohol-based sanitiser, avoid handshakes and close contact with anyone who is ill, refrain from touching bodily fluids, and regularly disinfect high-touch surfaces. The advisory also strictly prohibits the purchase, handling, or consumption of bushmeat and requires that all animal products be thoroughly cooked.

Anyone experiencing sudden fever or related symptoms must report immediately to the health centre rather than self-medicate.

Emergency contacts listed in the advisory include the LASUSTECH Medical Centre emergency line (0800-LASUSTECH-HEALTH (DHA -), the medical services email medicalservices@lasustech.edu.ng, and the Lagos State Ministry of Health toll-free number 08003265243. The university has called on the campus community to remain calm, follow the protocols, and stay informed through official channels as national monitoring continues.
