By Jegede Adesoji Muhammed

Academic activities are expected to resume at Lagos State University (LASU), Lagos State University of Education (LASUED) and Lagos State University of Science and Technology (LASUSTECH) following the suspension of the ongoing industrial action by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).
The decision comes after negotiations between the union and the Lagos State Government over staff welfare and the implementation of outstanding agreements.

According to a report by published by Punch Online on 10th of October 2026, ASUU announced the suspension on Friday in a joint statement signed by Olusegun Babalola, Coordinator of the Steering Committee, ASUU-LASU; Grace Abimbola, Acting Chairman, ASUU-LASUED; and Murisiku Onigemo, Chairman, ASUU-LASUSTECH.
In the statement, the union described the development as a significant step towards addressing its demands, particularly those concerning staff welfare and existing academic agreements.

The suspension is expected to ease the disruption caused by the strike and bring relief to students and parents who have been affected by the interruption of academic activities across the three institutions.

ASUU also expressed appreciation to individuals and organisations that supported its efforts throughout the negotiations. Those acknowledged included media organisations, civil society groups, traditional rulers, students and parents.

The union specifically recognised the contributions of the Joint Action Front, Education Rights Concern and Campaign for Democratic Workers Rights, noting their support for quality public tertiary education.

While directing its members to return to the classrooms with immediate effect, ASUU reaffirmed its commitment to academic excellence and the delivery of quality university education.
The union further noted that its engagement with the Lagos State Government would continue until all outstanding issues relating to staff welfare and other agreements are fully resolved.

The suspension marks a significant development for students of LASU, LASUED and LASUSTECH, although the full resolution of the issues raised by the union remains a subject of ongoing discussions.
