The prolonged strike by staff unions across Lagos State-owned universities is set to end after s State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu approved the domestication and implementation of the ASUU/SSANU/NASU/NAAT agreement.
The approval, conveyed in a letter on October 7, 2026 and signed by the Commissioner for Tertiary Education, Mr. Tolani Sule, followed weeks of industrial action that paralysed academic and administrative activities at Lagos State University (LASU), Lagos State University of Science and Technology (LASUSTECH), Lagos State University of Education (LASUED), and Lagos State University College of Medicine (LASUCOM).
Under the approved package, academic staff will receive a 40 per cent Consolidated Academic Tools Allowance (CATA) and a 10 per cent Earned Academic Allowance (EAA). Readers will now earn a monthly allowance of ₦70,000, while Professors will receive ₦145,000 per month. Non-academic staff have been granted a 35 per cent upward review of their allowances.
The new packages take effect from January 1, 2026, with outstanding arrears to be paid in two tranches alongside the October and November 2026 salaries. All approved allowances are to be tax-free.
The unions involved, the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU), Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions (NASU), and National Association of Academic Technologists (NAAT) are expected to meet and review the government’s offer before formally suspending the industrial action.
However, relevant government agencies have been directed to commence immediate implementation of the approval in line with existing financial regulations. The Commissioner has appealed to the leadership of the unions to direct their members to call off the strike and resume work without delay.
