The President of the National Union of Lagos State Students (NULASS) at Lagos State University of Science and Technology (LASUSTECH), Comrade Bakare Baqiat Olapeju, has been suspended for two months following accusations of misconduct, insubordination, and failure to perform her constitutional duties.
The decision was reached at the first budget sitting of the Students Parliamentary Council (SPC), held on March 5, 2025, after a heated debate regarding her actions and that of other executive members.
During the budget discussion, tensions escalated when the Deputy Speaker observed that the President failed to properly acknowledge the presence of the Speaker, Deputy Speaker, Honourable Members, and other functionaries. Instead, she reportedly displayed a rude attitude, used foul language, and accused the SPC of disrespecting her office.
As a result, the Deputy Speaker ordered her to leave the sitting but remain within the premises until recalled. However, while leaving, she allegedly continued using abusive language against the SPC.
Following this, Hon. Adeyemi raised a motion stating that the President had failed in her duties by not conducting a general meeting across both campuses. The General Secretary was asked to present minutes and attendance records of the last two meetings but failed to do so, claiming he did not have them at hand.
Further questioning by Hon. Adeyemi revealed that the Welfare Director was unaware of the transportation arrangements for a recent football match at LASU. It was also confirmed that the President had only sent a representative instead of attending in person.
These issues led Hon. Adeyemi to accuse the President of incompetence, irresponsibility, and disrespect towards the Speaker, Deputy Speaker, and the entire union. He moved a motion for her removal, supported by Hon. Sulaimon, who urged the Speaker to make a decisive judgment.
After deliberations, the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Edidi Azeezat Omowonuola, ruled that Comr. Bakare Baqiat Olapeju would be suspended for two months. During this period, the Vice President, Comr. Bashua Muhammad, would take over as Acting President. She was also required to submit an apology letter via the Clerk to the SPC email and pay a fine of ₦5,000 for contempt of the parliamentary house.
The General Secretary was sanctioned for being rude to the Acting Chief Whip. As a consequence, he was directed to write an apology letter to the affected officials and pay a fine of ₦3,000 within 48 hours.
Additionally, all members who were absent from the last sitting were required to submit apology letters via the Clerk to the SPC email and pay a fine of ₦10,000 to the SPC account within 48 hours.
With the suspension in effect, the Vice President is now expected to lead the union and address the issues raised during the sitting. Meanwhile, the PRO’s case, which was also brought up, was deferred to the next meeting due to time constraints.
