A fresh controversy has erupted in the National Union of Lagos State Students (NULASS) LASUSTECH chapter over reports that suspended President Comrade Bakare Baqiat Olapeju has been reinstated. However, SPC Speaker Rt. Hon. Edidi Azeezat Omowonuola denied the claim, stating that no official decision has been made.
Sources within the union alleged that Bakare’s suspension had been lifted but claimed that the SPC was reluctant to publicly announce the decision for fear of appearing weak and unserious to the student body.
However, in an interview with LASUSTECH WATCH, Speaker Edidi insisted that Bakare remains suspended until an official sitting is held to determine her status.
"The suspended president has not been reinstated because it has not been officially pasted. If she was reinstated, we would have posted it publicly. However, soon, a sitting will be held, and when she is reinstated, you will know," the Speaker stated.
The controversy surrounding Comrade Bakare Baqiat Olapeju’s suspension has deepened amid conflicting reports about her reinstatement.
Following her two-month suspension over alleged misconduct, insubordination, and failure to perform constitutional duties, rumors began circulating that she had been reinstated. However, sources within the Students’ Parliamentary Council (SPC) claimed that the leadership was hesitant to officially announce the decision, fearing it would make them appear weak and unserious.
Bakare had earlier rejected her suspension, calling it unfair and politically motivated. She argued that she was being targeted for reasons beyond the alleged infractions and insisted that the SPC mishandled the issue. In response, she provided explanations for her absence from previous sittings and denied accusations that she had insulted the parliamentary council.
Her suspension was announced after a heated budget sitting on March 5, 2025, where Deputy Speaker Idowu Sodiq accused her of disrespecting the council and failing to fulfill her presidential responsibilities. A motion was moved for her suspension, which was eventually approved by the Speaker.
As part of her punishment, she was required to write an apology letter and pay a fine of ₦5,000 before she could be reinstated. Other executive members also faced disciplinary actions, including the General Secretary, who was fined ₦3,000 for insubordination, and absent members, who were directed to pay a fine of ₦10,000 each.
Now, with reports suggesting that Bakare’s suspension might have been lifted, students are eager to know the SPC’s official stance. The Speaker’s latest statement confirms that a final decision has not yet been made, as the council is waiting for the next official sitting to deliberate on the matter.
