"Mind Your Business," LASUSTECH Vice-Chancellor Advises Matriculating Students

By Habeeb Ibrahim and Odelusi Abraham

"Mind your business," Professor Olumuyiwa Odusanya, Vice-Chancellor of Lagos State University of Science and Technology (LASUSTECH), advised students during the university’s third matriculation ceremony since its establishment in February 2022. The event took place at 500-seater Auditorium in Ikorodu campus.

The ceremony started with the introduction of key university officers. After the Vice-Chancellor officially declared the event open, goodwill messages were delivered to the students.

In his speech, Professor Odusanya congratulated the new students and reminded them that only “20 to 25% of eligible candidates” gain admission into Nigerian universities. He urged them to remain focused, stating, “There is a proper time for everything under the heavens. This is the time to learn and be fully engaged.” He further advised, “You are not part-time students; therefore, mind your business.”

Professor Olumuyiwa Olamade, Dean of the College of Applied Social Sciences, urged students to prioritize their upcoming exams, assuring them that “facilities will be made available to ensure a conducive exam environment.”

Dr. Seide Modupe Akoro, Acting Dean of the College of Basic Sciences, emphasized LASUSTECH’s commitment to high-quality education, adding, “The university is dedicated to ensuring that students earn their degrees and can compete successfully with graduates from other universities.”

Addressing concerns about direct entry students, Professor Odusanya stated, “That is a given. The Nigerian admission system allows us to admit students through JAMB, as well as those with higher qualifications, such as a first degree or diploma.”

A parent, Mr. Ojediran Mayowa Oladebo, praised the university’s learning environment but urged management to address accommodation challenges, saying, “Housing is a problem for students, and improving accommodations will enhance their learning experience.”

Mrs. Olufunmilayo Abosede Tifase, College Officer for the College of Applied Social Sciences, reassured students of ongoing improvements, stating, “Students should expect significant positive changes.”

The ceremony concluded with prayers and well-wishes for the students as they began their academic journey at LASUSTECH.
