He completed his programme at the Lagos state university (LASU) after successfully defended his thesis on Framing of farmers and herdsmen’s conflicts in selected Nigerian Newspapers (2020-2021) on Thursday 25th of January, 2024 bringing the number of doctoral degree holders among academic staffs in the department to 3.
The viva oral defense featured a number of distinguished academics, including Dr. T.OS Owolabi, the head of department of journalism, and Dr. Julius Adeyemo, his dissertation supervisor. The panel of examiners also included Prof. Sunday Olatola, a notable scholar in the field.
He said in his words that the thesis came at the right time because "the period I started my Ph.D was when the herdsmen were disturbing the farmers and I tried to see how newspapers handled the issues and also to see their angles to the story".
He shared his experience of studying during the COVID-19 and End SARS period, describing it as one of the most challenging periods of his academic career.
He further explained that the combination of the pandemic and the protests delayed his research proposal for over two and a half years. "It was a really difficult time, both mentally and academically," he said.
Okeowo added that one of the biggest challenges he faced during his PhD studies was balancing his academic work with family life. '"It was a challenge to keep up with all of my academic responsibilities while also caring for my family."
He said.
In closing, Dr. Taiwo Okeowo offered some valuable advice to those considering pursuing a PhD: "Dedication and commitment are essential for success in a PhD program. It takes hard work and perseverance to make it through the research requirements. But the reward of earning a doctorate degree is worth the effort."
