Berachah Adetoyinbo

Students of the Department of Mass Communication at Lagos State University of Science and Technology (LASUSTECH) on Thursday organised the second edition of the Beyond the Degree conference to prepare undergraduates for entrepreneurial opportunities and career success beyond graduation. The event, themed “Graduating into Entrepreneurship: The Future of Media Practitioners,” was held at the College of Agriculture Auditorium in Ikorodu, Lagos.

‎Delivering a keynote address, Strategic Communication Expert Ibrahim Fatoyinbo encouraged students to begin creating value with the opportunities and resources available to them. He advised participants to maximise their networks and immediate environment, noting that success often starts with identifying and utilising existing opportunities.

‎Other speakers at the event included Mr Biolatiri Victor, who urged students to understand their purpose and the impact they hope to make in society, and documentary, photographer and author Dayo Adedayo, who stressed that creativity remains relevant despite advances in Artificial Intelligence. Adedayo encouraged students to develop marketable skills and transform their talents into sustainable ventures.

The conference also featured panel discussions and interactive sessions that provided practical insights into entrepreneurship and professional growth. Organisers said the programme was designed to bridge the gap between academic learning and industry realities, while reinforcing the message that although a degree may open doors, value and skills are essential for long-term success.

‎The conference was organised by the Union of Campus Journalists (UCJ), LASUSTECH Chapter, in partnership with the Mass Communication Students Association (MACSA). It brought together students, lecturers, university officials, and media professionals to discuss the future of media practice, entrepreneurship, innovation, and career development in a rapidly changing industry
