VASH Holds Maiden Seminar for Volunteers

The Voices Against Sexual Harassment (VASH) Volunteers of Lagos State University of Science and Technology, Mass Communication Department, held its maiden seminar themed "Emotional Intelligence: A Prerequisite for Social Work Volunteers" on Thursday at the Mass Communication Department Newsroom.

VASH is a student-led initiative dedicated to raising awareness and combating sexual harassment through advocacy, education, and support for survivors. The group also trains volunteers to develop essential skills for handling sensitive social issues.
The seminar commenced with an opening remark by the Acting Head of the Mass Communication Department, Dr. Steven Anu' Adesemoye.

In his address, Dr. Adesemoye, welcomed students to the seminar, stating, "We understand that the demands of the 21st century are enormous because every student faces unique challenges, and the school's curriculum can never be enough to cater to all these." He emphasized the importance of associations and clubs in preparing students for life beyond academics.

The welcome address was delivered by the convener, Mrs. Bridget Adegboye, while the Team Lead, Oshuniran Sheriff, moderated the program.

The event featured keynote speaker and panelist Mr. Ibrahim Fatoyinbo, second panelist Engr. Sheriff Lamidi, and co-convener/panelist Miss Bukola Lasisi.
In his speech, Mr. Ibrahim Fatoyinbo highlighted key factors that aid emotional intelligence, including self-discovery and active listening. He linked emotional intelligence to volunteering, stressing the importance of empathy, social skills, self-regulation, and motivation. He advised volunteers to have mentors to guide them and emphasized that they should uphold good behavior as ambassadors of the association.

During the panel session, Engr. Sheriff Lamidi discussed empathy, emotional regulation, and stress management. Miss Bukola Lasisi spoke on the significance of self-awareness and its impact on social work, also encouraging volunteers to seek mentorship.

The program concluded with a vote of thanks by the Team's Communication Officer, Miss Olushile Habibat, who appreciated the guests and volunteers.

LASUSTECH Students, NANS Meet Baale Over Death of Colleague, Housing, and Electricity Issues
