The Lagos State University of Science and Technology, Ikorodu sensitizes and welcomes the freshers of the College of Environmental Science in an Orientation programme held at the Art and Industrial Design hall of the school yesterday, February 19th, 2025.
In an opening address delivered by Dr Oladayo Ibrahim, the head of department of Urban and Regional Planning, on behalf of the Dean of the college, Prof. Ayodeji Oladipupo Date-Abel, he expressed gratitude to God for the life of all present and officially welcomed the fresh students to the college, and also the returning students. He urged them to stay focused with their academic pursuit, stating that "Education is an effective tool for changing the world."
Additionally, Dr Ibrahim encouraged students to apply for the NELFUND, a student loan scheme from the government, so that they don't have to worry about their school fee, but stay focused on their studies.
Following the welcome speech, the moderator of the occasion, in the person of Dr Adedoyin Ademola, the College staff advisor encouraged the freshers especially to take register and take advantage of the school resources including the library, sports, and engage in other extra-curricular activities that would facilitate their overall performance.
Mrs Omunwummi Jolade Ogunbase, the representative of the College advisor urged the freshers also to complete their registration process, as that is what makes them a bonafide student of the institution. She further stated that every student is expected to attain a minimum of 70% attendance each semester in order to be able to qualify to sit for the school examination. Hence, student attendance is compulsory.
"Students are expected to have a healthy relationship with their lecturers and know their lecturers by name and the office they occupy, in case of any issue." Mrs Ogunbase said.
Furthermore, Dr Adepegba, the head of department of Arts and industrial Design warns that examination malpractice is highly prohibited, and could lead to rustication of the students involved. Moreover, students should strive for academic excellence. Unfortunately, any student who fails a course would have to carryout (repeat) it over and over again until he/she passes, otherwise the student would be adviced to withdraw his admission.
Dr Adepegba highlighted the recent change in the conduct of school examination, where the 100 level students are no longer undertaking Computer-Based Testing (CBT). He further explained that for a 100 level cakes to be considered eligible for CBT exam, the class should consist of a minimum of 250 students.
The head of department of Architecture, as represented by Mr Oladipupo Ajasa emphasised in the need time management, self-dependence, and self-development as a student. He urged the student also to "desist from collaboration during examination."
Mr Ajasa also stated that student should strike a balance between their social life and their academic. He encouraged students to engage in social, recreational, as well as religious activities, but always maintain focus in their academic pursuit.
Comrade Adama KiaKia, the vice chairman of National Association of Nigerian Students, Lagos Axis (NANS) encouraged the students to speak out to the leadership whenever they have issues bothering their welfare.
The vice chairman of NANS further encouraged the student to maintain good dress culture as ambassador of the prestigious institution, noting that "you will be addressed by way you dress." He added that, as good students of the school, they should be law-abiding and avoid keeping bad company.
In response to the student's welfare, Comrade Kiakia narrated the length the leadership has gone to ensure that the students' complaints are addressed, particularly stating the issue of power outage in the school and its environs. He promised that soon, power will be restored back to normal as the issue has been resolved by the authority.
Comrade Kiakia further encouraged the students to take advantage of the student loan scheme by the government. He also promised to take care of the school fee of the two best-preforming students from the college at the end of the academic session, to encourage the students to work harder in their academic endeavor.
Furthermore, the chairman of the school Student Consultative Assembly, Comrade David Gabriel, from the department of Urban and Regional Planning stating his mandate for the college including to foster unity and oneness amongst students, added that the school has zero-tolerance for cultism and any form of violence in or within the school premises. Hence, students should abstain from such.
He also assured the student that the leadership has their best interest at heart, stating their intervention in the issue of hike in school fee, and as a result led to the stabilization of the school fee till today.
The event was graced by dignitaries of the college, including the Heads of departments of the college, Dean of the college, College Student Advisor, Directorate of Sports, Student consultative chairman, National Association of Nigerian Students chairman, College president, and a handful of his executives.
The occasion was wrapped up student exhibition, ranging from music performance, dance, and spirited-chanting. The student on the other hand expressed excitement for having being part of the occasion, and being fully equipped with the necessary information needed to navigate the school system, as they share their firsthand experience and nuggets they were able to gather, in an interview with the Press.
