FEDSA-LASUSTECH Assembly Suspends President for One Week Over Misconduct

The It’s Federation of Epe Division Student Divisional Representative Council (FEDSA-DRC) of Lagos State University of Science and Technology (LASUSTECH) has suspended its president, Obadina Habeeb, for one week following alleged misconduct during a parliamentary session. The decision was made during the second physical sitting of the assembly, held on Wednesday, 29th of January, 2025.

The suspension, effective immediately, was initially proposed for two weeks by the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Edu Shaffi Oladehinde, and seconded by the Chief Press Secretary, Hon. Hassan Taiwo Bisiriyu. 

However, Hon. Adelaja Azanat opposed the motion, advocating for a lighter punishment, which included a one-week suspension along with an apology letter. The assembly ultimately agreed to this resolution.
Speaking on the matter, Speaker Oladehinde clarified that the suspension was not meant as a punishment but rather as a period for the president to consult with stakeholders and better understand parliamentary conduct.

"The first thing I said in the house was that it's not actually a suspension but a holiday for the president. He is working based on some misconceptions and needs to understand the laws and rules properly. Though he's working towards the progress of the federation, there are some things he's not getting right," Oladehinde stated.

He further emphasized that the president’s mode of addressing honorable members was inappropriate, adding that the misconduct had been previously addressed in a prior sitting. "Many honorables attacked me—not physically, but verbally—accusing me of allowing him to override the house. This made them believe I had a collaboration with him. This prompted me to raise the motion for suspension," he explained.
In response, Obadina Habeeb described the situation as a misunderstanding, stating that his actions were misinterpreted.

"I don't feel anything special about the suspension, but I think it's a misunderstanding of the situation. The honorables believe they have been so empowered to do and undo. While we all work as a family and friends for the development of the association, I now see them trying to set boundaries and be more official, which is supposed to be so," he said.

He also expressed concerns about the absence of a judicial body to review such decisions, suggesting that the suspension was based on "unreasonable excuses."

As part of the resolution, Habeeb is required to submit a formal apology letter to the house. Additionally, he has been directed to step aside from all executive responsibilities during his suspension.

While the FEDSA Assembly insists the move is necessary for the association's progress, the development has sparked mixed reactions among members.

    All in all, I'd say today's sitting was staged against the President . He was barely given the opportunity to vindicate himself before the house started deliberating on the perfect suspension meant for him. The word 'impeachment' was also used today, on excusable claims. Furthermore, the President was denied the opportunity to sit while being questioned, despite the obviousness of his underlying health issues. I will however admonish all members, executives and honorables, to be more considerate in issues concerning the federation's . All in all, everyone has the best interest of the federation at heart. E.P.E.!!!
