LASUSTECH Strike: Academic Activities Unaffected, Says University PRO

By Hassan Bisiriyu and Habeeb Ibrahim

On Monday, January 6, 2025, the official resumption day for LASUSTECH students after the festive period, reports emerged of an ongoing strike by some staff unions, causing temporary disruption on campus.

The gates of the institution were reportedly locked early in the day, leading to confusion among students and staff arriving for academic activities. Efforts by the Union of Campus Journalists (UCJ LASUSTECH) to investigate the situation revealed that the strike was being observed by non-academic staff.

Speaking on the matter, Mr. Lanre Kuye, the Director of Public Relations and Information at LASUSTECH, he clarified that the strike involved non-academic staff, primarily junior staff, though some senior staff were also participating. He confirmed that three other union including ASUU, were not on strike.

“For now, the strike will not affect academic activities unless other unions join in,” he assured. “Initially, the gates were locked, but we intervened to ensure access to the campus. The situation is under control for now.”

Similarly, the Chairman of the LASUSTECH Students Consultative Assembly, Comrade David Gabriel, also spoke on the matter. "I just left the first gate, and it has been reopened. The strike currently involves only non-academic staff, so we don't anticipate significant effects on students," he explained.

Efforts to reach the Dean of Student Affairs (DSA) for further clarification were unsuccessful as he was unavailable at the time.

While academic activities remain unaffected for now, students are advised to stay informed and monitor updates as the situation develops.
