ASUU LASUSTECH Chapter Decries Illegal Dissolution of Governing Councils

By Adeyemi Oluwanifemi and Mcakinsajijo Faith

The academic staff union of university (ASUU) Lagos State University of Science and Technology (LASUSTECH) Chapter has reiterated the concern of the apex body of ASUU over what it called illegal dissolution of Governing Council in Federal and State University.

The chairman of LASUSTECH Chapter, Comrade Tayo Okulaja, pointed out that the Governing Council are not only constituted by government nominees but other internally elected members of the institution.

Okulaja said this in Ikorodu, Lagos at a press conference organized by LASUSTECH Chapter stressing that the union was not carried along before the dissolution of the councils which is against the constitution of the institution and eroding academic freedom of these schools.

According to him, "in 2019 the Lagos State government had an agreement with the unions in the state on salary structure which the state government also key into the agreement the federal government had with ASUU".

"He observed that the agreement as at 2024 is obsolete while academic staff do not enjoy annual increment except a personalized salary structure".

ASUU LASUSTECH Chapter has therefore advocated for a more strategic approach that prioritizes the development and enhancement of existing universities before establishing new ones, adding that while expanding access to higher education is important, it should however be done with adequate planning, funding and resources.

"ASUU is not violent, we are peace-loving, however, the only source of us laying our grievances is through these means. We do not wish to declare a strike but there's no other option for the government to listen to us"_Comrade Tayo Okulaja

It will be recalled that on Wednesday the Federal Government and academic staff union of universities (ASUU), ended their closed-door meeting with an agreement that all contentious issues would be amicably resolved to avert strike.

The parties agreed to kickstart a communication process to avert the planned industrial actions by the union.
