LASUSTECH VENDORS LAMENT OVER SALES DOWNTURN: Attribute Low Patronage To Transmutation
Vendors who operate at the Activities Centre of the Lagos State University of Science and Technology (LASUSTECH), have cried out over their recent experiences of low patronage and sales downturn occasioned by fewer number of students on campus as a result of recent transmutation of the institution from a polytechnic into a university.
This was made known through an interview conducted on Wednesday by LASUSTECH Press Club on a cross section of vendors at the school's Activities Centre in order to find out how they have been faring since the institution's transmutation.
Recall that the institution which was formerly a polytechnic(LASPOTECH) was transmuted into a university (LASUSTECH) following the signing into law, the University Bill by the Lagos State governor, Mr Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu on the 2nd of February, 2022.
Consequently, this had led to a reduction in the number of students of the institution as the various Part-Time programmes which usually accounted for a substantial chunk of the student's population, have currently been put on hold, leaving the institution with a few 100 and 200 level pioneer students of the young university.
Lamenting her ordeal to LASUSTECH Press Club Ms Blessing Richard, a dealer in clothings explained with great distress, that during the polytechnic days, she usually made at least 50,000 naira in a week, but now in the university era, she struggled to see 10,000 naira, and at worst, nothing would come out in a whole week.
She however expressed hope that things would normalise with time when more students come into the system, and in the same breath, advised the university management to erect student hostels within the campus to boost business strength.
Another vendor, Mrs Tessy Hassan who is the CEO, cloths and chop matters, opined that the institution was better off in its polytechnic days as the transmutation had hit them on a negative side. While hinting at leaving the environment at any slight opportunity, she advised the university management to incorporate more programmes and courses so as to attract more students into the system as a way of enhancing rapid economic activities.
Several other vendors shared similar sentiments on the issue, emphasising on the building of students hostels as it would also attract evening and night sales, thus, bolstering business activities on campus.
