Safiu Kehinde

In commiseration of the World Radio Day, Lagos State University of Science and Technology, yesterday, marked the first event to be held since its transition from Lagos State Polytechnic at 500-seaters auditorium.

Themed “Radio and Trust”, the event was hosted by the Department of Mass Communication in collaboration with the United Nations Information Centre (UNIC) and United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).

World Radio Day was proclaimed in 2011 by the Member States of UNESCO, and adopted by the United Nations General Assembly in 2012 as an international Day with February 13 marked for its celebration.

Honoring the event was the Acting Vice Chancellor of LASUSTECH, Dr. Oluremi Nurudeen Olaleye, represented by his Deputy, Mr. Kolawole Godonu. While delivering the welcome address, the AG VC commended the impact of radio as one of the most reliable source of information.

“…while we read all kind of things from the internet, Instagram, and others, radio still stand as a way of verifying what we are hearing because the integrity of the people behind the station still remain the same.” The AG VC said.

Also speaking at the event, the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor of Lagos State, Mr. Gboyega Akosile, lauded the contribution of radio to the society. He emphasized on the need to build trust in radio in order to avoid getting exposed to false information which characterized the internet- particularly the social media.

Reflecting back to the #EndSARS protest, Mr. Akosile revealed that the it took a while before the government realized that the crisis was not between the youths and the government. It was rather a war between the social media and the state government. False and unverified information, according to Chief Press Secretary, circulated the protest.

Meanwhile, present at the event were dignitaries such as the AGM Operations Channels TV, Mr. Kingsley Ubanta, the Executive Chairman, Lagos State Universal Basic Education Board (LASUBEB), Hon. Wahab Alawiye- represented by Mrs. Adebayo Motunrayo, National Information Officer, UNIC, Dr. Seyi Soremekun, and Vice Chairperson of Ikorodu LGA, Aarebinrin Princess Folashade, just to mention a few.
