10 Changes to expect as LASPOTECH turns LASUSTECH

Safiu Kehinde

The approval of Lagos State Polytechnic’s transition to Lagos State University of Science and Technology (LASUSTECH) has been followed by an indeterminate number of changes.

Earlier last week, we saw a change at the Institution’s realm of power where the Rector was changed by Lagos State Governor to  the Acting Vice Chancellor.

Subsequent to this was a new twist in the school’s anthem as heard from the students during the World Radio Day celebration. These are part of the expected changes and there are more of it to come.

In anticipation, Laspo Watch presents to you 10 changes to expect as LASPOTECH becomes LASUSTECH:

LASPOSUG: For the newbies and freshers, LASPOSUG is an acronym for Lagos State Polytechnic Students Union Government. Frequent users of campus' shuttles can not be oblivious to the inscription on commercial vehicles plying several routes across the school. The Students Union Government will also be weighing the possibility of changing the acronym. Thus, be prepared for either LASUSSUG or LASUSTECHSUG.

2.    Laspotech Bread and Laspotech Water: These two brands are one of the most famous brands in the school; especially the bread. Exiting the Campus through the first gate, you are most likely to hear the bread sellers chanting “Laspotech bread! Laspotech bread!” like it is some kind of incantation. Unfortunately, this melodious tune of the bread sellers is also bound to change. Both brands will soon be known as LASUSTECH Bread and LASUSTECH water. However, we hope the brands don’t just name, but change in quality and packaging, transiting from Polytechnic standard to University standard.

3.    LASPOTECH FM: Among the products of this institution is our indispensable Radio station, LASPOTECH FM. Over the years, listeners have familiarized themselves with the “Welcome to Coffee with LASPOTECH on LASPOTECH FM 101.9”. Similarly, our OAPs (On-Air Personality) will also have to do away with the old name and embrace the new one. LASPOTECH FM will possibly become LASUSTECH FM and “Coffee with LASPOTECH” could  become “Coffee with LASUSTECH”.

4.    “Great Laspotian Students o!”: This chant has gone to become a clarion call to all students and the institution's members of alumni body, most especially when the “greatest gbàgbà” and “greatest gbògbò” are included. We have become so acquainted to it that  a chant from one person will attract thunderous response from others. Unfortunately, the new dawn will also  bring a change to this age-old chants. We should brace ourselves for “Great Lasussian students!” or “Great lasustech students!”. In due time, however, the students will craft a new chant that will be relayed to generations to come.

5.    LASPOTECH Staff Primary and Secondary School: Just as a Yorùbá adage says, whatever affects the eyes will also affect the nose. Teachers and students of LASPOTECH Primary and Secondary School should also prepare to embrace the Institution’s new name and also be prepared to take the school from polytechnic standard to university standard.

6.    “me.mylaspotech.com”: Among the criteria for studentship in this Institution is to have a portal where payment transactions and other student-related activities are done. This web address is unarguably one of the addresses that automatically pop-up at the input of “m” on most students' web browsers, except those using substandard browsers. This web address is also bound to go into extinction once the Institution commences its operation as a University.

7.    Seven Schools to Seven Faculties: Seven, they say, is a perfect number. For years, Lagos State Polytechnic have boasted of its seven schools, producing crops of intellectual and innovative students who are making the institution proud  in their respective fields of endeavor. We might be familiar with the term “Faculty President”, but what we see often are School of Agriculture,  School of Technology, School of Management and Business Studies,  School of Engineering, School of Environmental Studies, School of Pure and Applied Science, and School of Communication and Liberal Studies. In due time, these schools will become full-fledged faculties such as Faculty of Social Science, Faculty of Engineering, etc.

8.    LASPOTECH Logo: The spherical logo has for long being the crest of the Institution’s brand identity. However, with a new name comes a new identity. This implies that a new logo will emerge soon to take over from the old one.

9.    Laspo Watch: As the sole news platform of Lagos State Polytechnic, we are also bound to conform to the Institution’s new identity. In due time, we shall transit from Laspo Watch to LASUSTECH Watch or something better.

1         LASPOTECH Press Club: Press Clubs from other tertiary institutions are already moving with the new development, referring to us as LASUSTECH Press Club as seen in a letter we received from National Association of Campus Editors (NANCE) earlier this week.   Fortunately, we are yet to be registered for the new session. To this effect, we might be the first association to be registered under the new name and LASPOTECH Press Club shall be reborn as LASUSTECH Press Club.

Regardless of all these changes, Lagos State Polytechnic will forever remain in our heart and will be worthy of mentioning in our history. You can remove the students from Lagos State Polytechnic, but you can not remove Lagos State Polytechnic from the students. Forever, we remain the Bedrock of Technology.
