The Students Union Judiciary Council (Lagos State Polytechnic Chapter) sworn-in new members of the jury at the Council's inaugural sitting held today at the office of the Chief Judge, Hon. Justice Adeniyi Emmanuel.

The ceremony which was scheduled for 10:am started by 11:58am due to some delay and arrangements.

Opening the event, the sitting Chief Judge, Hon. Justice Adeniyi Emmanuel, welcomed the members of the jury while introducing the invited guests in the person of erstwhile Chief Judges Mr. Abiola Abioye (2020/2021 session) and Mr. Teslim Abiodun ( 2018/2019 session).

Rendering the opening speech, Mr. Teslim Abiodun urged the new members of the jury to be familiar with the constitution while emphasizing on the relevance of the SUJC.

"We must be familiar with our constitution, there is an opinion around Lagos State Polytechnic that the SUJC is an irrelevant form of government. They don't get to hear more from us. They see more of the executive and the legislative. I want to tell us this afternoon that the judiciary arm of government, the way it is structured in Lagos State Polytechnic, we are a very important arm of government as contained in the constitution. As justices, let's carry ourselves with some form of dignity."

The former Chief Judge revealed that the jury also have a role to play in the Students Union Government and should not see themselves as second-class citizens.

"In the politics of the Students Union Government, you also have a role to play. Please soak yourself in the student union constitution and find time to also familiarize yourself with the judiciary arm of Nigeria".

However, Mr. Teslim warned the new members against sprouting into action over any occurrence without consulting the Council.

"If anything is happening within the school, please and please don't rush to comment, don't rush to talk. Try as much as possible to get the view of the council because you are representing the council-SUJC." he added.

In the same vein, the immediate past Chief Judge, Mr. Abiola Abioye, emphasized on the relevance of the Judiciary Council and its members.

"If you choose not to be relevant, you won't be relevant. It all goes down to you as justice. If you want to be relevant, you have to portray that act." He said, citing the constitution to support his claim.

Mr. Abiola further read the functions of the jury, as provided in the constitution, to the new members.

In case the Students Union Executive Council (SUEC) and Students Representative Council (SRC) were dissolved, the SUJC, according to the constitution, has the power to setup a caretaker committee among Congress members which shall be headed by the chairman.

The jury also have the power to query any Union Officer who are not performing their duty.
