Bisiriyu Hassan Taiwo, The Chief Press Secretary of the Federation of Epe Division Students Association (FEDSA) at LASUSTECH, hosted a webinar aimed at educating students on how to balance academic responsibilities with unionism.

The virtual event, themed “Balancing Academics with Unionism,” featured two guest speakers: Mr. Ibrahim Fatoyinbo, a lecturer in the Department of Mass Communication at LASUSTECH, and Ambassador Biliamin Olalekan Oba, Senior Special Assistant to the Lagos State Governor on  Youth and Social Development.

The webinar was co-hosted by Rt. Hon. Edu Shaffi Oladehinde and moderated by Hon. Adelaja Azeezat, who began the session by defining unionism as representing students’ interests and organizing beneficial programmes.

In his opening remarks, Hon. Bisiriyu Hassan Taiwo appreciated all attendees and urged participants to engage meaningfully, learn from the speakers, and network with one another.

Mr. Fatoyinbo, the first speaker, stressed that while student leadership is important, academics must remain a top priority. He advised students to manage time effectively, set clear goals, communicate well, and uphold integrity. He noted that unionism can be a stepping stone to leadership opportunities but must not interfere with academic success.

Ambassador Oba, emphasized the importance of passion, self-awareness, and multitasking. He cautioned against overcommitting and neglecting mental health, encouraging students to understand the value of service and impact in leadership.

During the question-and-answer segment, three students received scholarships, including Abraham Odelusi, a 100-level Mass Communication student; Comr. Sadiq Olashile Kiakia, a 300-level Aquaculture and Fisheries student and FOSSU LASUSTECH President; and Comrade Abdul Ganiu Lamina Oloruntosin, a 300-level Office and Information Management student and PRO 2 of the College of Applied Social Sciences.

The scholarships were sponsored by Mr. Raji Quadri Oluwadamilare, the Coordinator of the Ikorodu North Youth Assembly of Nigeria.

Notable dignitaries in attendance included Comrade Ibrahim Habeeb Irewole of the Union of Campus Journalists; Hon. Mahruf Olumuyiwa Odunare, Deputy Speaker of the Lagos Parliament; and other student leaders.
