The Federation of Epe Division Students Association (FEDSA), Lagos State University of Science and Technology (LASUSTECH), recently held a virtual webinar themed “Balancing Unionism with Academics” to educate students on managing student activism alongside academic responsibilities.
The webinar, hosted via Google Meet, was organized by Hon. Hassan Taiwo Bisiriyu, Chief Press Secretary of FEDSA LASUSTECH DRC. He said the aim was to enlighten student leaders on how to thrive in unionism without neglecting their academic performance.
“I want students who are interested in unionism to learn how it works and how to properly balance it with their studies,” Hon. Hassan said, adding that his own success as a student leader comes from building good relationships with lecturers, attending classes, and delegating tasks effectively.
Mr. Fatoyinbo Ibrahim, a lecturer in the Mass Communication Department, described unionism as a task that requires intelligence and strategic thinking.
“You must attend meetings, plan activities, and still turn in your assignments, attend classes, and prepare for exams,” he said.
He advised student leaders to apply time management, set clear goals, delegate duties, communicate effectively, and create personal reading timetables.
Also speaking at the event, Ambassador Biliamin Olalekan Oba, Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Social Duties, encouraged student leaders to master multitasking and maintain a strong personal brand.
“Leadership comes with responsibilities. You must be able to handle stress, stay mentally healthy, and carry others along,” he said.
During the question-and-answer session, three students were awarded scholarships for their participation: Odelusi Abraham Fayokunumi, 100-level, Mass Communication, Comr. Sadiq Olashile Kiakia, 300-level, Aquaculture and Fisheries, and FOSSU LASUSTECH President, and Comrade Abdul Ganiu Lamina Oloruntosin, 300-level, Office and Information Management, and PRO, College of Applied Social Sciences
The webinar emphasized that with discipline, planning, and support, student leaders can excel in both unionism and academics. As Hon. Hassan quoted from one of the speakers, “Unionism is not for someone who is not intelligent, and it’s not for people who are hungry.”
