“We’ve Paid for Your Medical Treatments” – LASUSTECH VC Urges Students to Use Health Insurance

The Vice Chancellor of Lagos State University of Science and Technology (LASUSTECH), Professor Olumuyiwa Odusanya, has urged students to take advantage of the Ilera Eko Health Insurance Scheme, saying the university pays an annual premium on their behalf to ensure access to medical care.

Professor Odusanya made this known on Thursday during a sensitization program on the Ilera Eko initiative, organized by the Lagos State Health Management Agency (LASHMA) at the LASUSTECH campus in Ikorodu.

"Prevention is better, faster, more effective, and cheaper than cure," he said. "Each year, we pay a premium for students to access medical care at accredited healthcare providers. If not used, those funds remain unaccessed."

The Vice Chancellor emphasized that the Ilera Eko plan guarantees access to healthcare once the premium is paid. “As a university, we pay that premium, and that enables our students to get affordable healthcare at minimal cost,” he stated, advising students to avoid self-medication and fully utilize the health insurance plan.

Also speaking at the event, Mrs. Ogunmusere Temitayo, a Customer Service Officer for Ilera Eko, outlined the benefits of the scheme. These include eye examinations, simple tooth extractions, X-rays, maternity care and delivery, and telemedicine (online consultations).

“Ilera Eko’s goal is to leave no one behind,” she said in an interview. “Anyone who registers online or at our offices is entitled to proper medical treatment at accredited hospitals.”

In the same vein, Mrs. Uchechukwu Igwoya, Head of Sales and Marketing at LASHMA, reiterated the agency’s mission of providing “access to quality and affordable health insurance for all.” She highlighted their partnership with over 450 accredited hospitals across Lagos State, offering care to registered individuals.

She further stressed the importance of having health insurance, especially during emergencies. “Hospitals are more likely to offer prompt care when there is an assurance of payment through insurance,” she noted.

The Ilera Eko health team also engaged LASUSTECH students through brief health education sessions, sensitizing them on the importance and benefits of health insurance.
