Speaking on the university’s commitment to the partnership, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academics), Prof. Abiodun Denloye, said the institution would provide land for the proposed incubation hubs and involve students in innovation programmes to support the commercialisation of research. The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) confirmed the development on Friday, with many students across the country sharing screenshots of credit alerts on X. In a statement, NANS National President Akinteye Babatunde welcomed the payments and assured students that all outstanding backlogs would be settled. “The payment of June and July NELFUND upkeep allowances has officially commenced. As I assured you, every outstanding backlog will be paid. We remain committed to ensuring that no eligible Nigerian student is left behind,” he said. The scheme, which stands for Credit for Laptops, Internet, Connectivity and Knowledge Digital Devices, was launched by the Nigerian Consumer Credit Corporation (CREDICORP) in partnership with the Federal Ministry of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy to improve access to digital devices for learners. It has become a difficult struggle between paying high rent and enduring poor living conditions. Across First Gate, Second Gate, and Odogunyan, students are spending a significant part of their finances on rent, agent fees, and agreement charges. Although no injuries were officially confirmed, the incident caused heavy traffic congestion, delayed students sitting for their examinations, and increased transport fares, placing unnecessary hardship on commuters. Truck drivers must take greater responsibility whenever they are transporting heavy loads. Roads around schools and other busy areas require extra caution, especially during the rainy season when road conditions may become more challenging. Careless or excessive speeding by drivers of heavy-duty vehicles can have serious consequences for innocent road users. The visit, which was confirmed in a memo from the Registrar's office, comes as the university renews pressure on staff who have yet to subscribe to the scheme. The memo describes continued non-compliance as "unacceptable," noting that the directive has been in force for some time and that staff were previously informed of the government's intent to enforce it.
