Mass Communication Department of the Lagos State University of Science and Technology (LASUSTECH), Ikorodu, partnered with Dataphyte Academy to train its 300-level students in data journalism through a two-day programme held on May 21 and 22, 2026, at the university's ICT Centre.
The programme covered data-driven storytelling, infographics, and data visualization, taking participants through the full journalism workflow, from sourcing and verification to analysis and visual presentation using real-world datasets. Students also engaged in hands-on exercises and explored ethical considerations in data reporting.
Head of Department, Dr. Zannu Prosper, said the initiative was introduced to meet the growing demand for data-literate journalists in the modern media landscape, while lead facilitator, Mr. Kehinde Ogunyale, stressed that future practitioners must master data interpretation, pattern identification, and visual presentation to remain relevant in modern journalism.
Dr. Steve Anu' Adesemoye, course lecturer, described the skills as more than technical. "Learning infographics and data visualization in Nigeria is not just a technical skill; it is a power multiplier. It equips you to make sense of chaos, influence decisions, advance your career, and contribute to national development in an increasingly data-driven world," he said.
The department also presented an Award of Excellence to Dataphyte Academy. Awards of Recognition were presented to the Directors of ICT and Works and Services, Dr. Alpha Ebole and Arc. Oluwagbemiga Odeniran, for their support during the programme.
The latest training builds on earlier collaborations between LASUSTECH and Dataphyte Academy. In September 2024, both institutions organized a two-day workshop on AI and Data Journalism for students and lecturers in the department, focusing on data-driven storytelling, artificial intelligence in journalism, and data visualization using tools such as Power BI.
The partnership was sustained in 2025 with another training programme involving 300-level students as part of ongoing efforts to strengthen digital and data journalism education within the department.
