The Lagos State University of Science and Technology (LASUSTECH) on Monday marked its 4th Founder’s Day with key announcements on student enrolment growth, programme accreditation, and plans for its first convocation ceremony.
At the event held at the College of Agriculture Auditorium, the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Olumuyiwa Odusanya, disclosed that the university’s student population has surpassed 12,600, four years after its transition to a university. He also revealed that 39 out of the institution’s 41 academic programmes have been presented to the National Universities Commission (NUC) for accreditation.
It was announced that LASUSTECH’s pioneer set of degree students will graduate in August 2026, while the institution’s maiden convocation ceremony has been fixed for February 2, 2027, contrary to an earlier announcement of February 13 made at a previous student engagement meeting.
He outlined developments recorded by the university since its establishment, including expansion of physical infrastructure, recruitment and training of academic staff, and student achievements in professional examinations. According to him, some students of the institution were recently inducted into the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN).
As part of activities marking the Founder’s Day, the Vice-Chancellor also announced the institution of an annual Best Graduating Student Award, endowed in his name and that of his wife.
The event featured a keynote lecture delivered by the Vice-Chancellor of the Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA), Prof. Adenike Temidayo Oladiji. In her presentation, she highlighted the role of universities of science and technology within Nigeria’s higher education system and spoke on the need for structured collaboration among such institutions.
Prof. Oladiji noted that Nigeria currently has 309 universities across federal, state, and private ownership, with a fraction designated as universities of science and technology. She also spoke on funding patterns for research and the relationship between universities and industry in research and development.
A major highlight of the ceremony was the presentation of scholarships to outstanding students from across the university’s colleges. The Overall Best Student Award was presented to Ruth Ayomide Ajayi, a 300-level Animal Science student from the College of Agriculture, who recorded a cumulative grade point average of 4.97. Five students from each college also received scholarship awards.
