LASUSTECH Students Rejoice As Management Introduces 3-day Work Week.

Students of Lagos State University of Science and Technology (LASUSTECH) rejoices as the management implement the directive order from the Lagos State Government on off day palliative in education and working sectors.

Stating that "all institutions and working sectors should only be going to work on monday to wednesday to save cost of transportation and other expenses 

LASUSTECH as an institution also follow this order, providing privilege of thursday and friday for Students to read ahead of their next class.

It was announced in LASUSTECH Isolo campus on Tuesday 29th of February 2024, left ikorodu students in anticipation before the  information was passed across to all the HODs and HOCs of each department in their respective college.

LASUSTECH management, planned to attend to 100 level students from Monday to Wednesday while they use Thursday and Friday as self study meanwhile, 200 level students were given the privilege to study at home on Mondays and Fridays, using Tuesday to Thursday as work day.

Engaging with students regarding the recent implementation, many shared their sentiments about the new changes.

In an interview with Ajide Muminat, 200-Level Student, she expressed her belief that the implementation reflects consideration for both workers and students. However, she anticipates a lack of free time during the 3-day work week and emphasized her choice to stay home to acquire a skill: "They seem considerate about workers and students, but the 3-day work week might be overwhelming, leaving no free time". She said.

Comrade Odugbesi Abiodun Jabirat, Nulass Lasustech Welfare Director 1 and HOC of Biotechnology and Food Technology Department highlighted student satisfaction with the 3-day work week due to reduced transportation costs. Yet, she acknowledged potential challenges, including the lack of free time leading to fatigue and potential difficulty in students assimilating lectures. He questioned the alignment of the directive with LASUSTECH's overall educational goals.

Ambrose, HOC Architecture 200 Level, said: "I think it's okay; there'll be enough time for a balance of activities. No challenges foreseen. This change will give me time for online classes related to the stock market."

Agboola Abdulganiyu Adedoyin, 200 level HOC for Marketing department: "I felt good about the decision because of Nigeria economy at the moment isn’t friendly. It will reduce the cost of commuting to school every day.

"With regard to your second point, the school should consider offering some courses online to accommodate students who live far away and to prevent them from getting home late.

"The extra days off could be used to give students more time to study and prepare for examinations".

Abdulsalam Raadiyah, 200 level students of Mass Communication sees the 3-day work week as a positive change but acknowledges potential challenges like adjusting schedules, communication issues, and reduced motivation. She plans to use the free days for self-study, exam preparation, personal interests, or spending time with family and friends. Abdulsalaam emphasizes the importance of planning to make the most of the free time.

Kashimawo Blessing, 100 Level student of Mass Communication express happiness about the 3-day work week, she anticipates challenges due to limited class time. She plans to use the additional free days for self-study and preparation by creating a personal timetable.

Fasanya Fathia, another 100 level student of Mass Communication strongly criticizes the implementation, citing an anticipated excessive workload. She questions how those lagging in class activities will comprehend and plans to use her free days for leisurely reading: "The implementation is very bad; workload will be too much". Her words.

Aderibigbe Mariam from Mass communication also acknowledges the intent of the 3-day work week to allow more time for self-study but worries about potential productivity loss and disruption to schedules. She emphasizes the importance of research, reading ahead, and breaking down assignments into manageable tasks.

Shakiru Oluwagbafunmi from Mass Communication sees the 3-day work week as a double-edged sword, foreseeing student stress due to rushed lectures. Despite concerns, he plans to cope and use the library during free days for self-study.

Ejalonibu Morenikeji from Mass communication identifies a challenge in classes moved to the 3 days, with 8-hour lectures without breaks. She plans to spend free days in the library and questions the potential impact of the directive on LASUSTECH's goals.

In sum, a considerable number of students welcome the directive issued by the Lagos State Government under the leadership of Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu. However, some students viewed it negatively, expressing concerns about the potential for an overwhelming workload.

FEDSA-LASUSTECH Assembly Suspends President for One Week Over Misconduct

Habeeb Ibrahim  The It’s Federation of Epe Division Student Divisional Representative Council (FEDSA-DRC) of Lagos State University of Science and Technology (LASUSTECH) has suspended its president, Obadina Habeeb, for one week following alleged misconduct during a parliamentary session. The decision was made during the second physical sitting of the assembly, held on Wednesday, 29th of January, 2025. The suspension, effective immediately, was initially proposed for two weeks by the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Edu Shaffi Oladehinde, and seconded by the Chief Press Secretary, Hon. Hassan Taiwo Bisiriyu.  However, Hon. Adelaja Azanat opposed the motion, advocating for a lighter punishment, which included a one-week suspension along with an apology letter.
