AFYMP Trains LASUSTECH Students in Content Creation and News Writing

Ibrahim Habeeb and Ajide Muminat

The Africa Foundation for Young Media Professionals (AFYMP) recently conducted a training session at Lagos State University of Science and Technology (LASUSTECH) to equip mass communication students with skills in content creation and news writing.

Mr. Yinka Olaito, the speaker, commenced by citing examples of journalists who initially doubted their potential but eventually excelled, such as Komlar Dumor from the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC).

He emphasized the importance of continuous self-improvement and consistency, stating, "The ability to fact-check issues is what defines you as a journalist, it's one thing to tell a story, but another to get it right. You can't be an international journalist without starting at the local level."

He urged students to identify their passions and develop content around them, whether in sports, beauty, lifestyle, or other areas.

Mr. Olaito emphasized the significance of creativity, proper text and graphics usage, mentorship, balanced opinions, and adherence to professional guidelines.

Highlighting ethics, he stressed the importance of obtaining consent before using people's images or videos and emphasized the need for fact-checking before publishing.

He encouraged emotional, intellectual, and storytelling connections with audiences, underscoring the value of connecting emotionally.

Assuring students of their potential as journalists and content creators, Mr. Olaito advised understanding audience preferences, vocabulary choices, and the significance of human-centric storytelling.

To excel as a storyteller, he emphasized active listening, creativity, and inspiration while respecting privacy, acknowledging mistakes promptly, and maintaining transparency in corrections. He encouraged authenticity, research, uniqueness, and content creation to stand out effectively.

Mr. Olaito recommended establishing a platform to share knowledge, utilizing platforms like LinkedIn, Instagram, TikTok, podcasts, and others to gain visibility, authority, and opportunities.

In sum, he emphasized simplicity, using straightforward language to ensure accessibility and engagement.
