LASPOTECH holds summit to prepare students for life after school

The final year student of Mass Communication Department of Lagos State Polytechnic (LASPOTECH) , held her fourth annual Town-Gown Summit, as part of efforts to prepare students for ‘life after school’.
The event, organized by the HND2 student of the department was held on Thursday, April 13, 2023, at the 500-seater Auditorium, tagged “Your Skill(s), Your Future!” aimed to equip students with the necessary skills for success in the media industry after graduation.
Experts from various sector of the media including, Mr. Lekan Otufodunrin, a seasoned journalist and media career development specialist, Executive Director of the Media Career Development Network, MR.Odion Aleouba, CEO of Modion Communication and a worldwide award-winning PR and media specialist, MR. Tayo Akanle, General Manager of Lagos Traffic Radio, Liberal minded, Journalist and technocrat with the No. 1 civil service in Nigeria, was represented by Mr. Dare Durosimi, head of the marketing department of Lagos Traffic Radio (96.1FM).
Speaking at the event, MR. Odion Aleouba in his presentation titled ‘Disruption of Public Relations in the Digital Age’ predicted the future of Public Relations and explained the current trends in the PR space.

“PR is longer securing editorial spaces, but spaces in the minds of the consumers”
"Evolving customer and communications trends make digital storytelling, social listening, social purpose, and big data as the defining factors in the industry in the nearest future," He said.
On the other hand, MR. Lekan Otufodunrin discussed the topic, ‘Your Skills, Your Future’, encouraged the students to get employable skills, and narrated how he gained employment a year after graduation due to his writing skills, developed as an undergraduate.
“I studied Mass Communication at the University of Lagos between 1982 and 1985. My news-writing skills learnt at UNILAG and internship got me a job in The Punch which has taken me around the world”.
“It is expedient for everyone to have a skill and utilization of such skills will take you to the top.” He concluded.
Furthermore, Mr. Dare Durosimi, head of the marketing department at Lagos Traffic Radio 96.1FM, encouraged the students to learn skills that will make them stand out in the industry.
“Your choice of career today, might not be what you are interested in doing. Wherever you go, your skills will set you aside, and your skills will attract more money to you”.
He went further “Skill is the ability to use one’s knowledge extensively in acting, it is the necessity of education in acquiring physical tags and the ability to perform in competent matters”.
Speaking with our correspondent, MR. Lekan Otufodunrin lauded the students of the department for organising such an educative programme and encouraged them to acquire employable skills.
His words “The industry is not asking for Ph.D. skills from the student but basic skills, start now to connect the dot between the classroom learning and the simple industrial skills to make different”
“Question the existing protocol so you can make innovation and impact in the field. The goal of it all is to have teamwork, sit down brainstorm with the ones that have skills different from yours, and make things work”.
DR.Prosper Zannu, HOD of Mass communication, acclaimed that the town Gown Summit has come to stay and explained the concept of studentification".
His words “You are central to all the planning we do and that is why we have organized this wonderful occasion."
“ We know you can do incredible things when given the platform reasons why we commend students for their intelligence.
“ Studentification means the transformation of the urban spaces resulting from increased attention on students such as economic transformation, physician transformation.”
“This 4th edition of the GOWN - TOWN is appropriately entitled " Your skills: Your future”, To prepare our student ahead of the challenges in the media industry”.
The expectations from this program was truly fulfilled, students/I learnt some new things that I have not even hope of doing in the nearest years to come.
